Oh boy, where's my popcorn?  In all seriousness, I don't think there's a definitive answer.  Before somebody goes and posts that page about competitions in the '60s, times have changed.  We have new powders, more precise barrel making, better metallurgy, etc..  .308 is supposed to have an edge in the accuracy department because of the shape of the case and burn characteristics of the powder column.  I think the great majority of people really wouldn't be able to tell any difference between the 2 out of high-quality barrels and using handloaded or match grade ammunition.  MJD

"they" are talking a lot about .338 Lapua being a great round, however, for LE/Mil uses.

Wow,

At ranges past 700 meters the .408 Cheytac carries more energy than a .50 BMG ball round.

Stays supersonic out past 2000 meters.

IMO 308 has much more inherent accuracy than 30-06. So 308 for me.

.308

since they dont make a 30.06 match round, and its reputed to be less accurate, then you might as well go w/ the .308

go any bigger, you might as well go w/ a .50 BMG

As long as its not shot from a glock, it will be okay.  The screaming from the hand injury can give away the snipers position.
