When will doctors implant a speaker in your ear and a microphone in your throat and turn you into a always on cell phone?

How long before doctors are implanting a small camera on your optic nerve and you become a always on digital camera?

I'm thinking 10-15 years.

Most probably think it a joke, but I'm being serious.  With the rapid advancement of technology, things like this will happen sooner than I even care to think about.

50 years and the human race will be always plugged into the info superhighway.

You've been watching Johnny Mnemonic again, haven't you?

No one in their right mind would let a surgeon implant that shit 'under their skin'.  In 10-15 years you'll just superglue a little chip to your earlobe or outer ear that will permit the same funcions you describe.

I know because I'm on the internet.

Careful what you wish for.   Chances are some 400lb hag with no teeth will have one for the same reason and next thing you know you will find yourself in bed with her!

I thought about that as well.  These implants would have to be engineered to give them a usable life of 5-10 years.

Life and technology does seem to imitate TV and movies though.  40 years ago we saw Uhura talk to the galaxy via a small earpiece.  Now we see people talk to the world via a wireless Bluetooth earpiece.

And you know there are people out there willing to have such things implanted.

A couple years back Japanes engineers created a cell phone that implants in your cheek and uses bone resonance for Mic and Speaker. Didn't catch on obviously.

I liked the episode of Stargate with "the link" -- A small device interfaced to the brain which connects one to a database of all known information. Without that mind-control thing though.

Googled it - Stargate Season 7, Ep. 5, Revisions

Well, hippocampus-emulators and artificial retinas have already been invented. Kevin Warwick created a way to interpret artificial senses. An interface is really all that's needed.
