Quick network help...

[ARCHIVED THREAD] - Quick network help...

I have cable. Cable goes to cable modem, then to switch. Desktop is plugged into switch. Works. Laptop is plugged into same switch and does not have a connection. The icon in the task tray looks like it is connected, but IE doesn’t work. I have tried to renew the IP addy, but it fails…

The LAN settings in IE are on Auto. I’ve switched ports. I’ve switched cables. On the back of the laptop, I have one solid green light and a blinking amber. I have re-started the laptop three times…What else should I try?

Aw hell, I'll bite. I'll walk you through troubleshooting.

First, Windows XP or 2000?

From a command prompt.....run:

ipconfig /renew

ipconfig /all to verify address (and dhcp server address)
then try:
ping localhost
then try:
ping (your ip addres, 192.168.1.100 or whatnot)
then if that works...
ping dhcpserver

Or get two IP addresses from your provider. While that will cost something more per month, it's easier than trying to setup some sort of sharing software and cheaper upfront than a router. With one of the local cable companies, I connected a customer this way. It just worked with no configuration for the Windows computers. Unfortunately that cable company got bought-out and the $5/month fee was jacked-up to $195/month.z

I'm guessing your ISP gives you only ONE connection.
If you connect your PC, then of course your laptop
won't get an IP address.
You need to get a router like a Linksys or somesuch brand
and the router receives the IP address then shares the connection
with your computers.

I had it set up this way at my old house, worked fine. Plug it all in at the new house, no dice.

Maybe I missed a step. I have a Linsys router... Should I plug the switch into the router? All I know is that I had about 4 or 5 computers networked at one and plugged into the switch...

Power down the cable modem and computers

There is a recessed reset button on the back of the router take a pen and hold it in about 45 sec. while powered up this should totally reset the router.

Then power down the router.

Power up the cable modem, wait till it comes online ...
Power up the router, wait till it comes online ...
Turn on computers...

Should go:

Cable->Cable Modem->(WAN Port)Linksys Router(LAN PORT)->Switch->Desktop and Laptop Plugged into switch

If you don't get link lights between the router and switch, you may need a crossover cable between the two.
