Yep they can be used to grind other things BUT you want to get one that is easy to clean.

Any coffee grinder can grind spices and seeds. Just make sure to clean it with rice between grindings.
A burr grinder is highly superior to a blade grinder. A blade grinder heats up whatever it's grinding, and a burr one won't. Less flavor loss. ETA: If you grind spices, you shouldn't use it for coffee. |

There are a couple of kinds of coffee grinders.
The ones that look like a clear lid over a small metal bowl with a couple of blades will do nicely for small amounts of spices/nuts, etc. I use one for spices. The Burr style coffee grinders (basically a couple of small, toothed wheels) are pretty much strictly for coffee--they tend to be more expensive anyway. A small 2 cup food processor would probably work best for what you are describing--they are pretty cheap. AFARR |

For press pot coffee you need a nice, even coarse grind. I used to use a blade grinder and it sucked. Then I had a cheapo burr grinder and it sucked too. I ended up getting a Starbucks Barista (made by Solis) and I'm very happy with it. |
