I am having a hard time deciding. I like to plink and punch paper, but home defense is also a viable concern. There are so many desirable weapons out there...

Right now, I only own one gun. A Bushmaster 16" heavy BBL carbine.

I am willing to spend 700-1000 dollars for a quality weapon. I don't want to buy any cheap crap.

Some ideas I had:

handguns:
SIG P229
H&K .45 TAC
S&W 686
1911 (Kimber or Springfield)

rifles:
Another AR-15, CMMG 20" govt profile upper with A2 stock or Stag arms M4 upper with SOPMOD stock
AR10
DSA STG58 FAL
M1A
USGI M1 Garand, used or from the CMP

I wish I could get 'em all, and maybe I will someday. But I need to decide which one would be the best now.

Any suggestions?

CMP GARAND

You pay $500, a few weeks later a fedex truck comes to your house and drops off an unbelievable well made rifle that's worth $700 minimum.

How can you go wrong?

springfield 1911 and a 12 gauge would run about 1000
or get a kimber for 1000, the kimber will most likly be a little more accurate

also get some heavier 223 rounds for the ar you have so it can reach out a little better, that will allow you to hold off on a MBR for a little longer

are you allowed to carry in MS? CCW available? If so get a handgun. If not, get another rifle as an AR15 is the best candidate for home defense anyway. Of your choices, I like the HK Tactical and the M1A

Those are all pretty good.  I'm planning on getting a DSA STG58 para when I can afford it.  Gotta have a real good battle rifle, y'know...

IMO, if you already have an AR, then you need a pistola - a nice 1911 would be my first choice.  If I had to thow all but one of my pistols away - I'd keep the 1911, without thinking twice about it.

For home defense, don't forget about the good ole' Mossberg 590 or Remington 870!  (not good for punching paper though)

+1

You have a rifle...... get a pistol and a shotgun.

A Kimber Custom II can be had for around $600, and a  Mossy pump 12 guage for around $225.

CPO Sig's are a hell of a deal right now too.  Check the ad in the EE...... a P226 or P229 , with both  .40SW and .357 Sig barrels for $550.

If you are buying a pistol to carry I'd buy two.

There was a thread recently about how one of our members team leader had a home invasion, shot the guy and then the cops took his only gun/pistol for evidence.  6 month wait.

Pistols are 99% personal preference.  All the big name brands are decent reliable if you do a wee bit of HW on them.

You could build a pair of 1911's for under a 1000.  A pair of glocks can easily be had as well.  Pair of G19's seem popular as it is a do it all gun.  Find two used glocks for cheap cheap you could have enough left over to build another AR.

I vote for a PAIR of pistols.

Get a CMP Garand, but only a CMP Garand (At least get a genuine USGI Garand.  Their inventory is dwindling.  (BTW, a CMP Garand is a used Garand)

You can then get a Sig from CDNN.  They have police trade-ins that have been sent back to Sig and gone over by them.  They are well less than $500.

Though I heartily recommend you get an AR10 at some point, get the Garand while the getting is good.  I have a feeling that once CMP runs out, the ones already in circulation will escalate in value a great deal.

ETA:  ALPHAGHOST, I didn't see your post when I posted this, so sorry.

I'd get the S&W 686 or the Sig P229 in .40 and get the .357 Sig barrel with it.  686's are fabulous revolvers, and the 229 is a perfect semi-auto.
