75-year-old man 'shook up' after shooting, killing intruder

A 75-year-old man shot and killed a 21-year-old who was burglarizing his home Tuesday afternoon in the Peach Orchard neighborhood, Macon police said.

Randolph Baker died at The Medical Center of Central Georgia at about 3 p.m. after being shot in the head, police Lt. Carl Fletcher said.

The resident, whose name was not released by police, was entering his home on Irving Avenue after a shopping trip at about 2:15 p.m. when he discovered two intruders in his home, police said.

Police Capt. Wayne Avery said the resident saw one intruder run from the living room to a back bedroom, followed him and watched him climb out the window, Avery said.

When the resident turned around, he saw the second intruder, later identified as Baker, come toward him, Avery said. The homeowner fired a handgun once, striking Baker, he said.

"He's kind of shook up," Avery said of the homeowner.

Fletcher said the case appears to be one of self defense, but the case will be sent to the Bibb County district attorney, who will decide if charges will be filed.

"He reacted," Fletcher said of the 75-year-old. "That was his reaction to protect himself and his property."

Baker's mother, Ernestine Chapman, arrived at the scene as police investigated, screaming about Baker's injury and asking police questions. Chapman said she left the scene to see her son in the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Baker had been in the Bibb County jail 12 times in the past three years, Bibb County sheriff's spokesman Capt. David Davis said. Baker had cases pending in Bibb County Superior Court for obstruction, possession of cocaine and theft by receiving, according to the Bibb County Superior Clerk's Office.

When police returned to the neighborhood shortly before 5 p.m., they arrested Baker's alleged accomplice, Jerald Jerome Bright, 26, and charged him with burglary, said Sgt. Cornelius Pendleton.

Yellow crime scene tape roped off the front yard of the pale yellow wood-frame house as police officers and detectives discussed the case.

Neighbors, who did not want to be identified, said they were not surprised about the daytime burglary.

They said they didn't know their neighbor very well because he kept to himself.

Telegraph photographer Grant Blankenship contributed to this report.

Gosh, the burglar's momma is worried about her son being injured rather than her son burglarizing and threatening a 75-year old man.

Thank You un-named 75 year old man -- you just removed a real piece of shit from the planet.  Don't feel bad about what you were forced to do.

To randolh baker's mom --- fuck you you criminal breeding whore.  I hope the state makes you get your tubes tied so you don't produce anymore sub-human trash to fill our jails.

It is amazing that these mothers are always right there on the scene screaming and yelling AFTER the fact.

I'm sure we will be reading follow up article soon, in the presence of her attorney, about how good and sweet her boy was despite his long rap sheet and that he should not have been shot.

Good job!

One shot with a pistol, one kill. And yet some arfcommers will continue to say that handguns are worthless for home defense
