Quoted: It varies by the state and forest, call the local rangaer district or check the web page for "recreational shooting". There might be extra local restrictions (fire hazard) that won't be up to date online.
Close to me, Pike NF is pretty reasonable: be safe, minimum distance from buildings, and not across roads or water.

I worked a detail in the NF here for almost two decades for the SO...we were very laid back about this, but safety was stressed since there are, or may be, roads in the NF within gunshot range, and killing lots of Uncle Sam's trees, destruction of government property, etc. is a no-no. While private land IS private land, some peculiar situations do exist when it is surrounded by NF property. Also, things have changed over the past 20 years, and may not be so laid back these days. Be very careful when going TO or leaving FROM such property...all guns...long guns, at least... cased, empty and out of reach, etc. (If a turkey attacked you on NF land out of season, you might be tempted to defend yourself!

National Forests have "concurrent LE jurisdiction" rather than "exclusive LE jurisdiction" most places (CA is an exception due to stste WC laws, IIRC) so the county guys OR the state / federal guys may show up.
