Officials Puzzled by Okla. Gas Geysers
By Associated Press

December 11, 2005, 7:47 PM EST

KINGFISHER, Okla. -- An outbreak of geysers spewing mud and gas into the air in rural Kingfisher County is puzzling state and local officials.

Kingfisher Fire Chief John Crawford says initial reports of the geysers came in Friday morning, and that firefighters and Oklahoma Corporation Commission officials were on the scene yesterday.

The geysers have appeared throughout the countryside of rural Kingfisher, with stretches of up to 12 miles between spots, and some as short as a quarter of a mile.

Crawford says the threat of the gas igniting is unlikely, but he says there is a concern the gas could begin coming up through water-well lines.

He says sheriff's deputies were dispatched to inform residents of the possibility of gas coming through wells and water systems.

We need another Great Lake. It'll be a nice size reservoir for Texas.

Geysers are a typical sign of volcanic activity not too far under the surface.

Look at yellowstone for examples.

Igniting unlikely?  rats, that's pretty interesting.

We had gases leaking up from the underground oil deposits in the Fairfax district of Los Angeles a few years back.  Fires coming from cracks in the sidewalks, etc.

I don't think Oklahoma has too much to be concerned about as far as earthquakes. However, Oklahoma is prime territory to be gobbled up by a mile wide twister churning across the countryside. Seems every region has some sort of natural disaster issue.

The New Madrid fault line extends down into OK.  When they have one, it will be a big one.

You guys are all on crack. An oil company was drilling a well, hit a high pressure gas pocket, then capped the well. The gas moved laterally under some limestone until it found a soft spot and broke through it to come up to the surface. That is the theory anyway, according to our news station. The creeks are boiling, looks cool.
