When I moved this summer I purcahsed one of the LG front loaders from Home Depot.  It has been great so far, but just make sure you have a solid base for the washer as they will shake the hell out of your house if you don't.

If you have any specific questions I would be happy to answer them (or ask the GF) for you.

They f**ked about 2500 factory workers in my hometown. (Galesburg,Il)  There was a thread about it here a while back.

Becareful with Kenmore, they dont really make anything themselves.  They have other companies make the product and they just put their stickers on the items.

Yes, they're made by Whirlpool and are very close to the Whirlpool branded Duets.  I liked the look of the Kenmore's, they were cheaper (I got a great deal) and I believe Consumer Reports rated them a best buy...

The LG units are great.  We bought the front loaders from Best Buy 18 month ago.  Two boys in the house, so those machines are running everyday.  No problems, they run great.

I bought my wife an LG front-loading combo unit (both washer and dryer in one).  Throw dirty clothes in, get clean dry clothes out!

She loves it.

Isn't LG the former company Goldstar?

Just wondering if this is true because I never was impressed by anything Goldstar made.

LG stands for Lucky Goldstar.... a giant South Korean company...

They make a shit load of stuff not just washing machines...

Well, I'm a cheap bastard...

I found a floor model washer at a big retailer here in Indianapolis, IN.  The sales guy then looked up that model number on his computer, and one of their other stores in town had the matching dryer, also discounted!  It had a small dent.

So, I saved about $250.  Pretty sweet!  They even delivered both at thge same time for one delivery/set up fee.

If you get the HE3t/HE4t (which are excellent, would not trade mine for anything else) read the HE3t FAQ first.

I sell appliances for Sears.

Whirlpool built Kenmore HE3T or HE4T or Whirlpool Duet HT frontloaders. They have heaters on board for very effective stain fighting and bacteria control. Great for baby stuff, animal bedding, sick rooms, etc. 1399 for the washer, 899 for the dryer. They are both the same machine made in the same factory (washers=Germany dryers = Fremont, Ohio) with different badging and switching. Pedestals elevate them about 15" and have a drawer for storage - very cool & convenient - 199 each. The delivery people put it all together for you. Supervise them - some of them are troglidytes or 800 lb gorillas or Neanderthals. Most of them are OK.

If you don't want or need the advanced capabilities of the heaters, you can get a Whirlpool built HE3 or Whirlpool Duet without the HT (thermal) designator - they're about 1099 each.

There's a new Whirlpool built Kenmore HE2 pair out - no heater, slightly fewer cycles & features, still very good for about 1500 the pair. I would have them in a minute.

Some Kenmores are built by Frigidaire. Avoid them like an anthrax letter. Avoid anything Frigidaire. Everything - and I mean everything they build is shit right now.

I've had people in my store trying to get service for their LG's. Best Buy had laughed at them. Sears won't work on them. When they screw up, you're screwed, there's no or few parts in the US, and few technicians to work on them.

The new Maytag frontloading Neptunes are built by Samsung in Korea and seem OK. They have a somewhat smaller heater set on board for stain control. 1099.

The new GE front loader has heaters, big capacity and lots of cycles for 899. They're cheaper cause they're made in the People's Republic of China. No shit. I haven't sold one yet, so no feedback.

Read the laundry forum at http://www.thathomesite.com for a LOT of good info, gripes, comments, et al. I don't know how to hot link this.

Buy the maintenance agreement on the washer - that's where all the moving parts and heavy electronics are.

I can't say enough good things about our Kenmore HE3 set.  There are many testimonials in this thread about the quality of the HE3 product.  Believe it!

You'll pay a chunk of change for the HE3/Duet product, but considering the amount of hard labor these appliances perform, it's one of the better investments you'll ever make.

Plus, the damn washer is so quiet, that I sometimes still have to check to see if it's running (been a couple of years now).

I went for the HE3t (heater) model as the higher temperature is required to kill dust mites, if you have allergies, it makes a difference. Also good if there is someone with a chronic illness in the house.

Other bonus of front loaders is you can wash stuff like sleeping bags without destroying the baffling inside (and you don't have to go to the nasty laundromat anymore!)

(ETA: The pedestal is a big help if you have a bad back, also check for a Sears outlet near you for scratch  n dents)

After it is installed, go over and check the installation (particularly tightening the leg levelers). If the installers don't tighten them (mine didn't) the machine will shake like Clinton in a room full o porn stars. Watch em like a hawk.

+1 on the Whirlpool Duets HT/Kenmore H3t.

One thing I was told is keep the washer door open after a wash to prevent mold growth.

Fisher & Paykel.

I had to replace our Kenmore washer and dryer at the same time.  First the washer started running wierd and leaking and then the dryer stopped drying.  Both machines were very pricey when we purchased them five years ago.  I was pissed when they crashed after such a short time.

The estimate to repair was over $500 for both so I started looking for better appliances.

Dr. Frige here was able to help out.  I also checked on line and with different stores.  Everybody told me that F&P were the best.

For those not in the now...go take a look at them...and ask an engineer about the many patented innovations found in the F&P machines now.  We opted for the top loading dryer too.  Amazing how that machine works.  The washer spins at 1000rpm to suck the water out of the clothes.  Very effective.  It is all auto also...and won't let you screw up and select say...delicate and HOT wather.  Darn thing sounds like a 747 spooling up the engines when it gets into the spin cycle.  The guys that installed ours also repair them.  They told me they can be in and out of an F&P in say...twenty minutes.  Only a couple of parts.  They don't fix them much though.  MTBF is pretty good.

Anyway...we looked...liked and purchased.  So far, both machines have performed flawlessly.

Oh...they were also WAY less pricey than the more expensive models made in the US.  Our dollar does quite well against NZ and Aussie dollars.

Did you get the pedestals also?

Read the above-posted HE3t FAQ before delivery, the washer is a piece of precision machinery (think it hits 1200 RPM on spin cycle) and (IIRC) there are safeties to keep the rotating assembly from being damaged in transit that must be addressed in the proper sequence (and it must be leveled & the base tightened etc.)

The goobers that installed mine said "oh yeah, we know how to install these" and as soon as they were out the door I re-did everything CORRECTLY and it has run like a champ ever since.
