I sell appliances for Sears.
Whirlpool built Kenmore HE3T or HE4T or Whirlpool Duet HT frontloaders. They have heaters on board for very effective stain fighting and bacteria control. Great for baby stuff, animal bedding, sick rooms, etc. 1399 for the washer, 899 for the dryer. They are both the same machine made in the same factory (washers=Germany dryers = Fremont, Ohio) with different badging and switching. Pedestals elevate them about 15" and have a drawer for storage - very cool & convenient - 199 each. The delivery people put it all together for you. Supervise them - some of them are troglidytes or 800 lb gorillas or Neanderthals. Most of them are OK.
If you don't want or need the advanced capabilities of the heaters, you can get a Whirlpool built HE3 or Whirlpool Duet without the HT (thermal) designator - they're about 1099 each.
There's a new Whirlpool built Kenmore HE2 pair out - no heater, slightly fewer cycles & features, still very good for about 1500 the pair. I would have them in a minute.
Some Kenmores are built by Frigidaire. Avoid them like an anthrax letter. Avoid anything Frigidaire. Everything - and I mean everything they build is shit right now.
I've had people in my store trying to get service for their LG's. Best Buy had laughed at them. Sears won't work on them. When they screw up, you're screwed, there's no or few parts in the US, and few technicians to work on them.
The new Maytag frontloading Neptunes are built by Samsung in Korea and seem OK. They have a somewhat smaller heater set on board for stain control. 1099.
The new GE front loader has heaters, big capacity and lots of cycles for 899. They're cheaper cause they're made in the People's Republic of China. No shit. I haven't sold one yet, so no feedback.
Read the laundry forum at http://www.thathomesite.com for a LOT of good info, gripes, comments, et al. I don't know how to hot link this.
Buy the maintenance agreement on the washer - that's where all the moving parts and heavy electronics are.
