cool project
reminds me to get a new string for my Dads recurve bow that he hasn't used in 30+ years so I can start using it. |
Just asking, but don't they use (sp) bodark for the bows? I know the indians around here did.

A friend hunts with a homemade flat bow.
Has killed scores of deer and a caribou with it. Went for moose this year but missed the rut and didnt' see a single one. |
Actually, you can build a bow out almost any wood you want. Some wood works better than others because of the different tensile/compression properties. Yew and osage orange are very popular woods for building bows. I like Hickory because it is a pretty straight grained hardwood that's very easy to work. I'll be cutting the bow profile this weekend.
Not an RV-6, it's a RV-4. It's the second plane I've built, the first was the RV-3A that you see in my avatar. |

Cool, when I was in boy scouts, I found a nice stave of probably cedar... I got a plane and worked on it, got it to where I wanted it, and strung it up... It probably ended up with a 35lb pull... launched a few arrows before a knot right in the middle ended up killing it.
I think I will try to get a longbow soon. I found a guy on Ebay that sells unfinished bows. All I'd have to do is find out how I want to finish it, then do it, and have a nice bow. |
I love RV's.
I started an Acro II many years ago. My ex took all the parts I'd fabricated. They probably ended up in the dump. I cut some Osage Orange blanks when I was deer hunting on my friend's farm in Missouri, but haven't gotten around to doing anything with them. |
Keep it coming! I've wanted to try a Welsh long bow, but I'd have to whip it up. You can get a good Sig for what some of those things go for.
This should be interesting. I wouldn't mind hearing about the plane too!
Is that Bill Clinton standing in the corner??? |
This place is so cool! i didn't know we had many traditional archery guys in here. I'm do my own wood arrows and flemish strings. I'm also thinking of doing a board bow project this winter. BTW I'm also the Veep of our local archery club. We are the best one in NW IN. Come by and see us!

You know I have a lot of spare time right now.
I should try and build a Welsh longbow. What are some good resources or books on bowbuilding? |
NOT only is that a cool project but that work area/ workout area/ etc... is just what I need at my casa...
Yup! I have all three books, and I agree if you want to build a bow you have to own these books! |

You ought to post your updates in the Hunting Forum, so that more interested parties can view your progress.
I'm a hardcore bowhunter, but don't know if I'd have the time to become proficient with a longbow or recurve, much less build my own. You have my admiration. |
Tag for the saga. I used to live for this stuff when I was a kid roaming the woods with the American Boy's Handbook.
5 years ago I was a semi-accomplished compound shooter. All the whiz-bang go fast stuff.
Later I learned to shoot some recurve with fingers. But I haven't touched a bow in 4 years. |
Tagged.
I met a girl from AZ once who was into shooting flat-bows. Prettiest girl I ever met... |
LOL, dang!!! You got a good eye... Yup. My friend and I watched the last of the great IMSA races at PIR many years ago - a great series, we were in a motor home on the infield and snagged as much memorabilia as we could. I was enamaled with the Toyota Eagles myself............ |
Like your airplane, too! RV-something? I have a friend whose father is building a One-Design (for aerobatic competition) right now. |

Thats really strange. About a week ago I decided I was going to build a longbow and am in the process of looking for a good quality tree around here I can cut up to make the staves. See if I can get the moisture down in time to start building it about this time next year. Your post so far is the BEST thing on the net I have seen about building bows (and I spent two solid nights searching for web pages).
Good luck and keep us posted. Looks awesome so far |
interesting.
people keep saying airplane, but it looks all the world like an iceboat to me...? |
Pretty cool. I made my first bow out of hickory when I was in middle school. Did it in my parents garage with a drawknife. It ended up having a draw weight of only 45 pounds, but that was fine by me. Took me forever. It is a little rough, but I still have it. Good luck, it looks very nice so far.

dude, you have an amazing shop. i thought you meant a model airplane, but after realizing you had a mini weight room in there, i started looking in the background of all the pics. thats a very nice place!
