Look at the painting behind the display. That's hanging on my bedroom wall as we speak. It's an actual painting, not a poster or something, and obviously the one in the image is a blown up copy.

Does anybody know anything about the painting, such as who made it (signature is illegible) and what it might be worth? Or if there a lot of copies of that painting?

I got it as a gift from my uncle when he moved to Georgia. It was part of a trio of paintings he had hanging in his garage that he seemed to think were pretty valuable. One was the interior view of the TIE pilot firing on the Millenium Falcon with the Death Star in the background, one was Darth Vader's fighter and two TIE's coming in behind Luke's X-Wing in the Death Star trench, and the other (my favorite) was of a Star Destroyer.

I would like a TIE pilot costume though.

Also, no pictures of the painting because it's at home and I'm at college. I'll take some photos when I go home for Thanksgiving.

Well the gun in the forgeound looks like a "turbo laser" from EP 4. The thing in the background is probably the completed Death Star from EP 4.

Only problem I have is the turbo lasers were on the Death Star firing at the Rebel fighters.

It's one of Ralph McQarrie's pre-production paintings done in 1974.

It is looking over Vader's shoulder as he shoots at the Millenium Falcon.

If it in fact the original then you can NAME YOUR PRICE and the Star Wars crowd will be thrusting fistfulls of money at you.

In other words it is VERY valuable.

Some of Ralph McQuarrie's artwork was supposedly stolen in '77, right around the time when the film was released...so if it's real, you may have some of the stolen artwork.

Are you sure it's real? There was a portfolio of his artwork sold back then.

Um, I saw the first one on opening day in 1977 and have have avidly absorbed every obscure factoid I come across ever since. So I can't tell you where I came across this info. I just know!

The air hoses and the rib on the helmet are making me think it is a TIE pilot, but since this is pre-production, it could be Vader just as easily.

I've seen images of the stormtrooper with a lightsaber painting. Somewhere on my computer is one. I seem to recall Han Solo having a saber in the painting as well and being dressed more like Lando and Chewbacca having really big ears.

I'd have never thought this was something like that though. I always figured it was a fan-made item until I saw the Smithsonian image I posted.

Lucas keeps an extremely tight reign on the props and paintings used in his movies, more than nearly any other Director in show business. I think the only way you're going to find the answer you are looking for is to contact Skywalker Ranch yourself and see if an archivist in fact has the original or not. What is the size of yours?

Steve Sansweet is also known as a true StarWars guru reference collectibles. Just Google his name and you'll be able to find out more about him. Gus Lopez, (who lives in WA state) could also be a help in tracking down this info for you, his site is http://www.toysrgus.com/collectors.html. I recommend taking some detailed digital pics first so these guys can really get a look at what you have.

If this painting is the real McCoy, your money problems could be over (seriously).

Swindle... Take a close look at the painting, can you see brush strokes or at least the paints thickness? Try shining a light on it from an oblique angle, that could throw the paint thickness into shadow relief.

...wow...

Before selling it, I'd take some good high res flatbed scans of it first. That way you could make your own mural or copy for your own purposes.
