Please explain why one must have 1:7 with a 14.5" barrel, cause it is not true.I have a Bushmaster M4A3 carbine and it has a 14.5" barrel with 1:9. I chose the 14.5" since here you do not need to register a rifle a SBR with a 14.5" barrel and it is THE authentic military M4 barrel length.

A 14.5 barrel with a break is shorter than a 16 barrel with a break. I would assume that a 14.5 barrel with a break is lighter than a 16 barrel without a break and has less recoil too. Personally, If it's got to be 16, then I'll take a 16 barrel rather than a 14.5 with a break. This way you get more velocity.

The one I really don't get is 11" with a permanent 5" brake... doesn't make sense at all.

When I got my M4, there were no 16" barrels. There were also no 1x9" twist barrels out yet. It also just happens to fit my Assault Systems bag with the stock collapsed, and a 16" with F/S will not. I had a Colt A3 Carbine which has a 16" 1x9 barrel. I prefer the look of the M4, (way cool factor) the fact that my M4 barrel is chrome lined unlike the Colt which only has a chrome chamber. And the fact that if I feel the urge, I can fix bayonets!

I understand that length has nothing to do with twist rate. Does the military mfg 14.5 with 1x9 twist. Does Colt mfg 14.5 with 1x9 twist? I own two prebans and was going to get a phantom or vortex perm attached to 14.5 bringing it to the legal 16". I appreciate all of your comments. Should I concern myself with a 1x7 twist rate if I am going to plink and shot targets with 55 grain bullets? I may go for 14.5 just for the cool factor and so I can fix a bayonet if the need arises to roast winnies at camp outs. Looking for more comments. Thanks Folks!!!

The U.S. Military only uses 1x7" rate of twist. This is to stabilize the longer M856 tracer round. Colt does not have a 14.5" 1x9" twist barrel at this time. Bushmaster does have chrome lined 1x9" 14.5" barrels. I would buy the Bushy barrel and save the $100+ and spend it on ammo or accessories. My M4 is a Colt M4 marked flattop with a BM 14.5" M-4 1x7" military contract leftover barrel. I have had no washout problem with the 1x7". Also the overstabilization of 55gr and lighter bullets has not been a problem. Of course I am restricted to 100meter or less shots by policy.

A 14.5 plus hider is 16" total length
A 16" plus standard A2 birdcage hider is 17 1/4" 1 1/4" longer, BIG DEAL!!! you get more velocity and retain the ability to remove and/or replace the hider whenever you like, and put on whatever you like. unlike a permenantly attached hider. correct, bayo wont work on a 16", but I aint never needed to stick nuthin anyway. my .02 [x] |

My Bushmaster shorty AK is 14.5" w/brake and it is a 1/9 twist. I really didn't give it much thought, I just knew I wanted to get rid of the Mini-14 that I traded in on it to get a second AR!
