Recently a friend came home on leave from Afghanistan. He is married with 4 children (one of who he saw for the first time last week)
I had the honor of arranging flowers stateside for one of his guys KIA in a firefight a few months ago. (I'll admit I'm pulling the heart strings here, but its real life. ANd I have a devious purpose in mind) Talking with him yesterday, he mentioned wanting to convert his A1 into the M4 configuation he currently uses. He returns to the 'stan 15-Nov and anticipates return March 2006. In his absense, I'd like to convert his rifle, and have it ready for suprise presentation on his return. I'm willing to contribute some serious coin to make this happen, but wanted to ask y'all's participation. I'll need the following parts: M4 barrel (w/ fh) Picatinny gas block Rail handguards with panel covers (free float style) Rock River trigger / other decent trigger Flattop receiver Flip up iron front sight If you have any of these parts, and would like to donate, that would be freaking outstanding. If you need to get SOME money for your parts (but are willing to take a little bit of a loss to make this a reality) please email me with sale offers. (The A1 parts (NOT including lower receiver) *** MAY *** be available for trade / sale. Supposedly its a 25-30 y.o. rifle. They are all Colt as I understand it) Thanx. |

TLMIMW. If you're serious, IM me with an address and I'll send a $50 MO your way tomorrow.
Very. I'll keep everyone psted as to how its going. Got a telestock donated so far. Letters going out to manufacturers tomorrow. |
I am kinda strapped right now, but if you are still lacking parts by the first of the year I will be glad to kick in a Benjamin or two.
UPDATE
Requests for donations have been sent to: Fulton Armory Rock River Arms Bushmaster GG&G ArmaLite Olympic Arms J&T Distributing DS Arms (some seemed intrigued, others.....not so much) Doantions thus far: Tele stock $50 money order (so I guess I'll open this up to $$$ contributions, tho I'd rather not. But I can't be choosy here.) |
Update: Should have the A1 in hand this weekend. Pics to follow.
Personally, I think you should leave the A1 rifle as is. A 30 year old rifle has history, regardless of whether or not it has seen combat. Besides, all else you would need is a new lower and a LPK to build a new rifle. I vote build a new rifle. If this is agreeable, IM me and there's a $40 MO coming your way towards a new lower.
I agree the lowers are very cheap right now why not just start over and save a older rifle. |
Well first thing I thought while reading this was NEW RIFLE you want a real suprise leave his rifle AS is and build a new one. everyones right about lower recivers being cheaper
That's not a bad idea. He suggested converting his rifle. OK, new lower, leave A1 as is. In fact, I got a good idea how to do it..... More on that later. |

MO inbound. Be sure to take some pics when you are done. And send him my never-ending gratitude for the service for our Nation.
Thank you. That's the cool part about this rifle - I'll get to tell him about all the people he never met that made this happen because of their grattitude. Say tuned here for pics and updates. |

Tagged. I don't have any parts, but as soon as I can scrape some $$$, I'll kick in.
Garandman, it's likely you'll have some cash left over after this. If you do, think ammo for him. |
Good point.... I've got $100 pledged or send in right now. But I promise there will be NO extra cash or parts left over. Its the right thing to do. |
btt - still seeking contributions.
No word as yet from manufacturers. |
Not if I tell him first We will all have to go shooting next summer |
Try DPMS, they are good people. |
heh heh I wondered if you'd see this. Now don't go spoilin' the surprise. And YES we should all go shooting when y'all get back stateside. |
Getting kind of late but why not just get a new rifle? Especially if the A1 is an original firearm.
Be more than happy to help with a Bushy or RRA M4 "at cost." |
If you can raise the cash I can get you a complete rifle "at cost." |

Aug -
Thanx for the offer. As I stated in IM, the recipient expressed a preference for specific things, and I'd then have to reconfigure the purchased rifle anyway. Part of the joy of this project is getting to build the rifle, and tell him about all the people who had a part in it. Further, cash and parts contributions have already begun, and I'd have to return all that stuff, as well as contacting manufacturers, etc. But its a great offer, and I thank you for it. |
LMAO
I just had dinner with the recepient..... G-Man you better be glad I am good at keeping my mouth shut............. |
OPSEC, man. OPSEC. |
Unless you are bringing surplus ammo from your battalion, don't worry about ammo. |
UPDATE:
Got your MO VTHokie. THANX!!!! Its gonna go toward the trigger. Which is all we have left on this build. I can get one for $80 from Rock River, and we are DONE!!!!!!!! If anyone wants to contribute to the trigger, gret. If not, I'll cover it. If you think you missed out, maybe not. Please IM me directly. __________________________ I want to thank everyone who has jumped in to make this a reality. People look at me funny sometimes when I say "Gun people are the BEST people." But y'all proved that saying true yet again. I'll post a pic of the complete rifle as soon as the trigger is here. THANX AGAIN. I can't say that enuf. |
