Concha Y Toro is good and cheap. Yellowtail wines are good and cheap, although the cab is really weird tasting. Not bad, just weird. Acidic. Has a zing to it no other wine has.

Your gonna want to avoid Cabernets and much of the stuff from California.
Try south American wines, they are very reasonably priced and typically rather mellow in style. IMHO I prefer Malbec for its pleasant warmth, particularly Los Cardos, Trapiche, Trumpeteer, and Bodega Lurton (all of which you should find for less then 10$, although the Trumpeteer is a Malbec/shiraz blend and is a little more complicated on the palatte). Now If you wont something a little bit more spicey, Australian Shiraz is the ticket, Look for Wulf Blass, Penfolds, and Fat Croc. |

Two buck chuck is good, but four buck chuck is the winna. 75% Sonoma Valley grapes, wins a bunch of medals regularly, etc.
If you spend more than ten bucks on a bottle of wine, yuo are a tool. |

Vendange and Clos du Bois are inexpensive drinkable wines in my area. Can't stand the TJ' Chas Shaw crap. One place i worked(private club)wanted to put that shit on their wine list....

Go find some Blackstone Merlot, it's like $8.99... It's fairly good wine. I feed it to girls who don't know shit about wine.
For $13-15 try to find some Marquis-Philips cab... It's really good shit. |

Try Leaping Horse. They have very nice table wines in magnum bottles for just under $10. We go through one a week with our dinners.

A decent red wine that I use for large parties is Yellow Tail. It can be had for $7/bottle and is a million times better than anything in a box or with a screw cap. Just my .02

I suggest Bogle Merlot or Cabernet. Both are very good medium body wines for the price ~ $8. It's a California wine.

I am going to third this. There are quite a few good reds from Chile as well. We just finished profiling about 100 reds for a company last month. We didn't find a lot of good product from the U.S. unfortunately. |

I think you should consider a slightly higher price range, if you actually want to have a chance at getting into the "good wine" category.
My recommendations for a very approachable table wine in the $20 or under category would be some Australian Shiraz wines from the Barossa Valley, like the Grant Burge Shiraz. Another good one in that price range is the Shiraz from Shotfire, also from Australia. These are some of the best wines in the lower price ranges, and we often drink them with great satisfaction with dinner. It is a good way to enjoy a nice wine without the high prices that can come with very good wines. BTW, I have a long time of experience with wines, and have had many of the finest vintages of the 20th century, starting with 1921 and going forward in the Bordeaux. I've had virtually ALL of the Bordeaux selections from 1982, and by far the best(IMO) was the 1982 Chateau Cheval Blanc(St. Emilion), and it crushed the 1982 Lafite-Rothschild AND the 1982 Margaux in comparison. Probably the best wine I've ever had. I've shared bottles of wine valued at over $3000 per bottle, with friends over dinner. I'm not rich, and I bought these wines early, when they were just a hundred dollars per bottle, or thereabouts, and stored them as their value increased. The highest value bottle of wine that I've ever owned was a 1982 Petrus, which was valued at about $3900 per bottle when we drank it. Also drank 1982 Ausone, Haut-Brion, LaTour, Mouton Rothschild, Cos d'Estournel, Pichon d'Loungueville, Beycheville, Ducru-Beaucaillou, all excellent, but very expensive now. Some of my highlights were 1961 LaTour, 1921 Margaux, 1928 Y'quem, 1982 Y'quem, 1986 Y'quem, 1971 Ausone, 1970 Lafite, 1979 Petrus. All great. One day I'll find a way to get into the '45, '47, '49 Lafites, and of course, a '61 LaTour a'Pomerol, which is the one wine Robert Parker says you have to drink before you die. |

Do you really think the '45s and immediate post war vintages were all they were cracked up to be? Or was it a psychological effect from the war being over? I have wondered that for years. I have to say a properly aged Bordeaux is a true treat!
As for the question, there are a lot of good recommendations here. Look to South Africa for some good selections of sub $10.00 reds. South African shiraz and Cabs are pretty safe bets. If you can crowd the $10.00 level then consider some of the domestic red Zinfandels. They are monsters, flavor wise. Try Rabbit Ridge Zin for about $8-9.00, or Rancho Zabaco's family of Zins. For value you should try out the HRM Rex Goliath series of wines. They retail for sub $10.00 and the Cab is very consistantly good. Good luck, And remember to not operate any heavy machinery when you are drinking. |

Don't know about the great 40's vintages, because I haven't actually tried them yet.
But I surely will take any opportunity that I can to do so. If it happens that I do get the chance to try them, I'll be sure to mention it. In the meantime, if you can get a shot at an '82 Cheval Blanc, it will stun you how good it is. |

Kendal Jackson, Rabbit ridge, Rosemount Estates these are listed in order of price and taste 12.00 down to 6 or 7.
I have and still will drink alot of crappy wine but if I am serving it to anyone else the min. is Kendal Jackson. Anyone else notice they are now putting were the grapes are grown and the % of grapes in the wine if it is blended. I think this is do to the growers suing Charles Shaw. If it is it backfired on the Growers HUGE............. |

I appreciate the recommendation, but unfortunately I have very limited access to aged Bordeaux wines. It is time for me to develop the patience to properly age some new releases myself, because-as you pointed out- it is the affordable route to such treats.

For decent wine under $10 - look for Chilean wine. Specifically Montes. The exchange rate helps you out here.
K-J is OK. You get what you pay for, at least they are Sonoma grapes - for the most part. Stay the hell away from two buck chuck. That stuff tastes like crap. Its for people who drink wine out of plastic cups. If you can find California wines under $10 make sure the grapes are from Napa, Sonoma, or maybe Santa Ynez/Paso Robles. Central valley grapes are pretty bland so avoid them. Thats what they make the Chuck wines from. I've had more bad luck than good with Aussie wines. So you are on your own there. Your best bet is to find a wine shop that specializes in buying back odd lots from restaurants. High-volume places with a varied selection. You are more likely to get something good, though you probably won't be able to find it again at these types of places. And Costco can get some good values at times too.

Try to grab some of the Bordeaux's 2000 vintage if you can. It's increasing in price fast, so you might already be out of luck, but you might get a bottle or two at a good price if you look around. 2000 is supposed to be even better than '82 or '89. Also, remember to look at the 2nd Tier)Grand Cru) wines which are often the equal of the Premier Cru stuff, but still haven't been classified as Premier Cru yet. These might be: Cos d'Estournel Ducru-Beaucaillou Chateau Palmer Pichon de Longueville And if you like the Sauternes, Chateau Ruissec. Often nearly the equal of Y'quem at a fraction of the price. |
