This question was spawned from another thread.
Where did the whole concept of giving someone a discount just because they are old ??
Why not a discount because you're young, or disabled, or black or jewish etc...etc...
And it's not just the discount, it's the mentality thet they DESERVE that discount !!
I've never seen an old asshole as mad as when I didn't give them their 10% discount, which amounted to less than a dollar, that they thought they DESERVED !!

I think they are entitled toa  discount. Yes, they are ona  fixed income. You as a working aged person can up and change jobs if you think your current job doesn't give you enough. The elderly have fewer options to augment their income.

those people who are old and not on a fixed income do something modern people don't.  SAVE AND INVEST!

If you were smart you would be doing it as well.  If you do not save on high interest accounts now invest your money do not complain about them having more money because they worked hard for it.

On top of that business give a senior discount to do two things.  One it is polite and curtious to older americans unlike some of the responses in here and it gives the old people an incentive to come out, and do things since they usually only do it on sales and watch they're money better then younger people.  Also the 15% or whatever the store still makes a profit so it's a win win situation.

Why is it that only americans don't give respect to they're elders and shove them into homes and call them incompetent.   They worked hard for 60+ years and people complain because someone wants to give them 15% off they're meal

OK

I can tell you from experience that old people and rich people are the toughest ones to get a dime from.

I used to work at a parking lot while in high school, it was twenty cents per hour to park in the lot up to like 6 hours, then it went to $2 or something. I can't tell you how many freakin' LOADED rich - many old - people would come through in their Benzes with their fur coats on and some ridiculously huge jewels on that would get super pissed at me when I would tell them they owed twenty cents.

The lesson I learned was that the rich don't get (and stay) rich by giving their money away.

no one does.  And almost every rich person didn't get that way be being born rich or wealthy.  They drive somewhere they will gladly park they're car themself.  If you offer do it for free because they would be just fine doing it themselves.

Just because the US is turning into a service country doesn't mean the elders that helped build it are sinking with it.

LOL I once used the term "Fixed income" once to a friend and he said "If theirs is fixed, then mine is broken..."

Chances are retirees are on a much smaller income than you or I and it's doubtful they're going to be up for a raise anytime soon. A senior discount is a good way to get people in to your restaurant or whatever at any time. It helps keep the seats filled. And with all the Boomers retiring now and soon, it's a very powerful base of people to be friendly with. If I had a business (depending on the nature of the business of course) I'd offer some kind of senior discount. Why not?

For the rest, why not offer a discount to old people on a "Respect your elders" basis?

Considering that the AARP has turned into a liberal gun banning bastion of geezers I see no need to give ANYONE a discount based on age. If I gave a discount to teens based on their low income the oldsters would pee in their depends, all the while screaming age discrimination. I would much rather give discounts based on their loyalty as a customer and not on age. Besides, the senior citizen has the most wealth per capita then any other group. Why should they get a discount? Come to think of it, why should they get free rascals because they are fat blobs, and free viagra because they want to be frisky? It isn't worth 10 bucks every so often without taking it from some taxpayer? These are the same people who scream about having to pay taxes for schools when they have no kids at home anymore, always forgetting that the seniors before them paid THEIR school taxes without bitching all the time. And they did not have winter homes in Fla, L.V., and the like.  My best friends dad complains everytime he does not get a discount, BUT he drives a 40K+ Caddy and has plenty of money for guns, and toys. He does not need a discount.  I personally think SS discounts are Un-American, as they are all about discrimination based on nothing more then a psyical trait.

Just because AARP is fucked doesn't mean that old us "geezers" are the same.  I rescinded my membership when I found out about their gun-grabbing and told them why.

It used to be that even us "selfish ass baby boomers" respected our elders and had no problem with helping them out.  This is just selfish bullshit.

I guess the fact that we worked all our lives and quite a few of us served our country just doesn't mean anything anymore.

I was prematurly gray.  I had white hair from my mid forties.

One day, when I was about 51 years old, I went into a Mc Donalds and ordered a coffee.

An old lady behind the counter saw me and told the young girl that was waiting on me, "Honey, let me show you how to do a Senior Discount."

I started to be offended, but just decided to get the 43 cent coffee.

Like many things, it only hurts the first time.

I served also. I also do tons of stuff for seniors, we basically adopted the L.O.L across the street until she passed away. I have NOTHING against SS and am getting close to AARP age myself. I won't join either. However, the second seniors thought they were somehow more special then everyone else, it all went to hell. Being a senior in and of itself means nothing if you [not meaning you BTW] are an ass. And the Seniors today are raping the system systematically to the core. We as a country  have already stolen everything paul owns to pay peter and make his lil peter stiff. I seriously doubt there will be anything close to SS when I retire because it is being tossed around like confetti today. Social security NEVER meant free drugs and every thing it has blossemed into today.  It meant that one had something if they had nothing at the end part of their lives.

Excuse me, seniors are not small eaters until they get up around their 70s. 55-65 350 pounder women are pretty common around here. I don't think they eat small amounts.

Also, it's NOT that they get discounts, it's that I pay more to make up that discount. For every action there is a equal reaction.

It's all about business.  Take the movies; retiries and students generally have fexible hours compared to 9-5 folks, and a way to draw more people to the theatres during off hours is to offer discounts, similar to the twilight show.  Just another market to cater to.

The infamous Gimme Gimme Generation (also known as the "Baby Boomers").  A complete and utter embarassment in many respects to their parents.  (Yes, we all know that not ALL are like that *just most*...)

I love how they have managed to manipulate our democracy in order to vote them money (SS, drug benefit, medicare, etc.)  The discounts are store/restaurant owner policies but they are created by the general entitlement society we live in.  After thoroughly raping younger Americans and living off other people's wages, the "seniors" now feel that it is their right to even more benefits.  Restaurants lose too many customers by denying these old geezers their nickel off or whatever the fuck it is.

The world would be better off with the entitlement-minded people shot, stabbed, bludgeoned, or generally made dead

I dont care who or what it is, I get a little offended when anyone offers discounts to anyone else.

What it tells me is they can offer their product for that price and still make a profit, but instead they are trying to gouge me.

No better way to say, "CavVet, dont spend anymore of your money here" than to offer X company a discount.

As for the Seniors, no biggie, hopefully I will be blessed to live long enough to be mistaken like Dr Frige  collect them.
