Pics from the trip to the Airshow today, I have some video of the Thunderbirds that I'll try to get posted. Most notably missing were any attack helos, a Vought F-4U Corsair, an A-6 and an A-7. An F-23 woulda been nice too.

First pic, security team snipers over looking the parking lot.

Security team's Belgian Malinois. Impressive dog.

For the A-10 lovers. (myself included)

Sadly, they didn't have an intruder, but they did have an EA-6B Prowler.

Ass end of an F-15 Eagle.

That is a hook between the exhaust nozzles. It looked just like the arresting hook on the Hornet parked next to it, I'm still confused. Any info on that would be appreciated.

I've been up for a LONG time. Sorry.
I thought it was a huge no no for snipers to use a Scope as a spotting scope unless you were in a hostile situation. Both of them had binocs, and spotting scopes. and were using the scopes on their rifles to observe, Another odd thing, I saw a lot of M-16A2s and probably a few more M-4s. All of the M-4s had optics. Looked like red dots, I thought our .Mil was issued Acogs.

F-15s, F-16s, F-117s and F-22s are equipped with a lightweight tailhook so they can engage the departure end barrier during a rejected takeoff or brakeless landing.

Thank you, I was curious, I'd never noticed one before and its been forever since I was around them up close. It did look a lot more light duty than the one on the F-18.

I think it makes the rounds, today it was in a seperate group of planes, fenced off from the rest. I have the feeling that they were being shown by a private company. They all had donation "casings" in front of them.

Looks like a lot of new buildings were built since I left.

Captain Richie came and talked to an AFROTC class of mine back in 2002. That guy is amaizing. He came in wearing cowboy boots. He let us listen to the actual recording of him in Vietnam in a dog fight. JrROTC kids didn't really understand how much of a badass this guy is.

It was a decent show although we had to wait in line for over an hour to get through
the security checkpoint, and the Thunderbirds were about a hour late taking
off. The bad part is that I look like a lobster from sunburn.

Not everyone has them, purchases and command approved gear happens at all levels. SOme times the gear is battalion wide, sometimes smaller componnets make the decision on what to outfit their guys with.

We chewed some of the same dirt. Bco 1/509th PIR (91 till the army left in 93) lived in Bldg 714

I miss Little Rock Great hunting/fishing/shooting.

The primary cable that AF fighters use in case of an emergency is located near the half way point on the runway, the cable at the end of the runway is a backup in case they miss the first one.

One Hellcat didn't make it to the show:

(Putnam County, WVLT) Saturday, an antique aircraft crashed on Interstate 40 at the 295 mile marker in Putnam County, disrupting phone and internet service for more than 8,000 East Tennessee residents.

Power lines for the Knology Company were taken out when the plane crashed.

The plane landed in the median. Both lanes of traffic were shut down for hours. Residents say the power was out in surrounding areas.

The plane was a World War II vintage, from an air museum in Chino, California.

It's called a Grumman F6F Hellcat fighter plane.

The pilot died, whose name has not been released, died in the crash.

We didn't have to wait for any security. Drove right in and parked down by the end of the runway. Had my 3 year old in a wagon. Saw LOTS of M16 A2s. Took my HT and listened to the Thunderbirds on it. Glad they didn't search my car...

Wouldn't have made any difference. Security was a JOKE. The metal detector went off in 4 different places on me and I wasn't questioned or searched. I was sent right through.
