I have been waffling between buying a Sig226, Beretta92 and Browning HP.
All the arguments for each are pretty good so I need a little pushing.
I know you guys are more than willing to lend your opinion to your own personal choice. To limit the discussion to the 3 above let me tell you this,
the Glock does not feel comfortable in my hands. I am a fan of the 1911 but not interested in getting another. The HK will not do as I don't like a few things about them. Of course S&W is out of the question. I have seen too many Rugers semi's with problems.

the Sig226 is a good gun that works every time.

Beretta 92FS would be my pick...

Best thing to do is handle all of them, and buy the one that fits your hand the best. They are all good guns...
Personally I like the ergonomics and feel of the Beretta's.

I love my Browning HiPower, it just fits my hands just right. Never had any problems out of it, and it's pretty accurate right out of the box.

There are some fancier looking pistolas out there, but it fits me just right. I've shot both Glocks and Sigs, and they're nice guns, but just not for me.

Two more points. John Browning desinged the 1911. And they don't make Browning HiPowers anymore.

I'd recommend the 92 first, with the 226 as a close second.  You can still find high capacity magazines for the 92 at a reasonable price.  Haven't look for the 226 recently and no idea on the HP.  I don't have an HP, so I can't say anything for or against it.

Actually they did not stop making the HP just stopped importing them. Browning USA started to import them again about a month ago and you can find them fresh on the shelves.

Man, you have a tough decision between those three........here`s one more to think about.....check out the c-z line.....you`re talking 9mm i assume.....are you sure a revolver is out?........browning is excellent.....sigs are great....but imho i`d have to go with the 92 in stainless....it`s a beautiful machine.....if money is a issue, check out the cz`s.........[smoke]

I've shot all three at least 50 rounds worth, and I have to say that the Sig Sauer P226 is the best one and the most accurate. However, since you are a 1911 fan, you may like the single actioned Hi-Power better. I'm assuming of course that you want a 9mm; .40 cal may be a whole different story. You can't go wrong with the Sig though. Get Trijicon night sights on it, find some pre-ban high caps, and you're ready to roll.

Get hand surgery so that your hand does fit a Glock..just kidding. I've actually owned all 3 types of pistols your looking at. So here's my impression of all three:

>Hi-power, great design, cheap in price and easy to shot. I did have problems in shooting some hollowpoints but will feed most all day long.

>'92 FS, Great ergonomics but a little too thick in the midsection. I dont like safeties on my pistols for defensive shooting since your small motor skills go to hell in high stress situations. So forget about manipulating that tiny little safety if you're getting mugged. Plus read up a little on the construction on the slide, its built to take about 20,000 rounds, then it breaks. Dont believe me, ask most any soldier/professional that shoots for a living. Still dont believe me, read Handguns 2000 or 2001 annual where the slide broke at a little over 20,000 rounds.

>Sig 226, love all Sigs. Shoot them for a lifetime and I dont think anything will break. I've had my 228 for about 7 years now, well over 15000 rounds thru it, no breaks only a couple of malfuctions (due to ammo).

I have only shot the 92 and the 226.  Both are excellent choices.  High cap mags for the 92 are going to be easier to come by.  The best choice is the one you shoot the best.  Try them all before you buy.  Or buy them all.[:D]

I like the plastic fantastic guns myself,

Sig P226.  Sig is very high quality. I have a P220

I've had all 3 of those, and I still have my HiPower.

The HiPower is one of the most underrated handguns out there. It's by far one of my favorite shooters.

I'd get the 226. I've had 3 9mm Sigs and loved each one of them. I like the 225 the best but it only holds 8 or 9 rounds (but if your not missing who's counting).

I have 2 Beretta 92's, have put several thousand rounds through both, all kinds of ammo, and have NEVER had jam or failure of any kind from either. But I dont think you could go wrong with any of the guns you have mentioned.

GET A P229 IT IS GREAT! I have never had a better auto.

My opinion is the Beretta.  It is the least expensive of the three (I'm pretty sure), is a very reliable and rugged pistol, and has better safety features than the others. my .02

The Beretta is less expensive and the Hi-cap mags are easier to find. Do you want a safety?

Go find a range that has these guns for rental, and blast thru a few boxes of ammo, and determine for yourself.  Really tough choices, they are good quality guns.

Get the Hi Power. I got one for my wife she is 5'3, I am 6'6  and it fits both of us. It shoots right where you point it.

or a browning HP

I spent time and too much money finding the "perfect" handgun, for me anyway.

Beretta - great gun, too heavy and I hate the safety

Glock - doesn't fit my hand either and I don't like the system

S&W - see Beretta

1911 - almost perfect, but I don't like the safety

Hi-Power - see 1911

So I settled on the Sig P220.  Love it.  I added a P226 in 9MM and then a P239 in 9MM.  They're light, accurate, reliable, hicaps for the P226 are available, the decocker and double/single system seems perfect.

As themao said, get trijicons and hicaps.  Shoot ammo that's fairly hot.  Have fun and stay safe.

I have a 226 and have shot the 92 some and about 10 rounds through a Hi-Power so I really can't give an opinion on the Hi-Power.

Between the 226 and 92 I'd get the SIG. Mine's in 9mm and if I had to do it again I'd get a 40, you can buy aftermarket barrels for 9mm. You can also put about 12 9mm rounds in a 10 round 40 mag and they function fine. I also don't like the safety on the slide of the 92 ergonomics.

Some real good opinions here.
I spent a couple of years advising LEO's from local to the FBI, street, undercover, male and female on what I thought would work for the intended purpose and situation. I have shot just about every handgun on the market and owned many including a CZ.
Truth is I could probably get by with anyone but I just can't make up my own mind.
Go figure.

make mine a 92 'cuz of the serrated trigger guard - it keeps everything nicely lined up when emptying the mag...
