We went field hunting for ducks today since I got one yesterday. Set up the goose decoys with duck decoys out front. We had them ducks coming in non-stop. It was the most amazing day of hunting I have ever had/seen.
The first group in; I shot 3 shots but the little buggers eluded (aka I completely missed) my shots.
Second group comes in and locks up about 40 yds out and sails right in. Perfect landing, almost. When they were about 3 feet off the groud I yell take em. I jump up and drop 2 woodducks. 1 male, 1 female. My partner drops one female woodduck.
Ok, no more woodducks for me.
A coupld of minutes later we get a group of Mallards coming in. We jump up and I get a female and get out of the blind to go get her. As I am walking over, I see a group of 7 ducks coming in locked up. I acted as small as I could and yelled for my partner to take one. Boom, he gets a male woodduck. The most beautiful woodduck I have ever seen, by the way. He was so well colored!!!
So for the next 20 minutes all we keep getting to come in is woodducks. We must have had 40-50 at least in our spread. I have never seen anything like it. We keep yelling to each other, woodys! Well, we see a few mallards land and we have about 20 more coming in. I see one duck come right over my partners blind and land about 10 feet from the foot of my blind. He talks in a normal tone voice and says, ready? I say back yeah... we jump up and I take the one by my feet as it flys off about 15 yds away and I swing over and get a Drake mallard. I walk over and grab the other bird, sweeeet! A female pintail. My partner dropped another Mallard.
The most amazing day of duck hunting. My final tally:
1 Male woodduck
1 Female woodduck
1 Male Mallard
1 Female mallard
1 Female pintail
5 TOTAL!!!!!!
I am still high on adrenaline.
We didn't have a single goose even come within a mile of our spot. It was like we had a sign saying, 'The X is ---> that way."
I don't know if I will ever have another day hunting like this again and am happy to have had this one. I will remember this day till the day I die.
So far my year to date totals:
9 geese
1 Male woodduck
1 Female woodduck
2 Male Mallards
1 Female mallard
1 Female pintail
