Firefox has been letting thru some pop-ups lately, I think people are finding ways around Firefox because the code is open source and you can just program around the pop-up blocker. |

I run daily Norton A/V scans, have a firewall (2 actually), run Firefox, and have my Tools->Options->Cookies to delete cookies upon exiting Firefox, I get hardly anything running Adawre SE
 Only thing I get is cookies from when I started up Firefox the last time, even then I have a bunch of sites already blocked for setting cookies.

I would also install a registery monitor such as the one from Spybot, the system will advise you when something is about to make a change to the registery, and all you have to do is reply "NO," to the request to update the registery, and BAM! the virus is gone.

IE is perfectly safe now as long as you update and run sp2 with xp.
Have the built in spyware/popup blocker turned on and you'll be fine. Of course you have got to watch what you're clicking on to minimize potential problems. I have been running IE with XPPro SP2 and have had no problems. zero. nada. none. Firefox is not all it's cracked up to be. |

Do use Mozilla or Firefox. Don't annoy the crap out of your computer-savvy friends to fix all your problems. Do use some sort of firewall software. (Norton Internet Security, etc.) Antivirus software alone is not enough to protect you from the evils of today's internet. Don't use Microsoft products, if possible. Do use both spybot and ad-aware to perform periodic spyware scans. Don't mess with trying to clean a severly infected system. If spybot finds 5,344,234 malicious objects, format the frikkin thing and start over. You will never be able to get it perfectly clean. And, as always, prevention is your friend. |

 Second, Internet Exploder sucks ass. It is full of spyware, viruses, and crap. Get Firefox. The only times I use IE are at school and that's it. |

I have 2 or 3 "trusted" porn sites. I haven't had a problem up to now. Also, I don't anything over the WWW that I ain't afraid to share. If I ever have a "problem", I will hire a P.I. and I will hunt the bastards down. It will be the next great Hollywood movie.... "TR vs. PornScam." Most porn companies, I suspect, are on the "up and up". They are just honest entrepreneurs trying to make a buck. Finally, beware the spyware. I run a scan every other day. And I always come up clean.  What sites are you going to? Tell the rest of us so that we don't go there!!!!! (That would be a great revenge) Be brave. We won't judge you. P.S. Do you use condoms?????? |

Another source of crap getting on peoples systems is items installed by autorun sequences on DVD's.
But only fools insert unscanned/untested CD/DVD's when logged in as an administrator... ( problem never happens for a limited user... ) |

I've HEARD (but don't KNOW if it's valid or not) that sometimes 2 firewalls tend to negate eachother? I do know that when I nixed one of `em, (the Eathlink one) I DID seem to get fewer problems. Also, I tend to clean mine now w/Adaware SE Pro ALWAYS after D/L games off of Gamehouse.  There's always a FEW. I cleaned it once BEFORE d/l - everything "clean" then ALL I did was go D/l a game - had like 6 I think. FWIW.

If you have a broadband connection, it is best to use both a belt and suspenders. That means use both a hardware (router with at least NAT) and a software (Zone alarm, Kerio, Norton Internet Security, etc.) firewall. If possible, get a hardware firewall/router that has both NAT (Network Address Translation) and SPI (Stateful Packet Inspection). They are quite inexpensive nowdays and are a solid investment. Also, check to see if you have a static IP address. Don't have one unless you are running a server. It is much harder for the bad guys to hit a moving target. |

The problem with a lot of spyware is that it self-reinstalls and opens the door to other spyware.
All you need to do is get one of the little bad guys in your system and it will open the floodgate for others to pour in. Then you just need to wipe clean and reinstall. As for Windows XP Service Pack 2, I don't use it. It caused serious problems with both computers I tried it on. It is possible to be reasonably secure with SP1 if the necessary precautions are taken. BTW, I use Mozilla and not Firefox. It is a much more mature browser. |

If you are badly infected (e.g. Winfixer, isearch, etc.) these are the guys to go to:
GeeksToGo Awesome volunteer help. As long as you can follow directions, they can fix just about anything. You'll have to do your part first ( run some clean up programs, stop with the pr0n, etc.) but they've fixed some downright nasty infections. Top Guns (watch out for imitators that actually install malware!) AdAware Spybot Search & Destroy Cleanup! Trojan Hunter and the big daddy Hijack This! <---essential diagnostic tool.

You can test your firewall at Gibson Research. Follow the links for Shields Up.
I use FireFox under Windows 2000 Pro, and am behind a Netgear router on a cable modem. I'm in full Stealth mode according to Gibson Research. I do not have a software firewall. My spyware protection is Spybot, Spyware Doctor, Spyware Blaster, and Ad-Aware. My virus software is Symantec AntiVirus. I cruise for porn, both video and jpgs. I don't play any computer games online or off, or play DVDs or CDs on the computer. I keep my software updated and run scans weekly, if not more. I never get infected. GL |

Safe web surfing habits will fix the problem.
You are using a fairly secure browser, much more secure than IE anyway. So you are up on that at least. You are more than likely downloading "free" games screensavers and clicking on the "shoot the ** and win a prize" games. If not you , someone is. Porn? Like everyone says, its a problem. Kids use the computer? Wife? girlfriend? ? Dlowaded toolbars, weatherbug? Any internet accelerators?You probably have a few dozen programs loaded with adware and spyware and you seriously need to dump. |
