Arab world commemorates 32nd anniversary of Yom Kippur war
By Haaretz Service and the wires

The Arab world commemorated on Thursday the 32nd anniversary of the Yom Kippur war, known throughout the Arab world as the October war.

Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak marked the anniversary of by releasing 861 prisoners and telling the nation that  success on the battlefield  had led to freedom and a better life.

"This victory  has moved us from liberating captured land to a similar liberation in our political life and national economy," Mubarak said in a televised speech.

"The October  victory was, and still is, a watershed in the history of the homeland," he added.

Meanwhile, Syrian President Bashar Assad laid a wreath of flowers on the tomb of the unknown soldier in Damascus.

Assad was accompanied during the ceremony by Syrian Defense Minister, Major General Hasan Turkmany, and the Syrian Chief of Staff, Ali Habib.

The Yom Kippur war began when Egypt and Syria took advantage of the Jewish Yom Kippur holiday to launch surprise attacks on Israel.

Caught off guard, Israel Defense Forces sustained heavy casualties as Arab armies advanced deep into Israeli territory. However, the IDF soon recovered and pushed the Arab armies back, crossing the Suez Canal in the south and coming within range of artillery fire on Damascus in the north.

Despite the Israeli recovery, the war is seen as a victory throughout the Arab world because of the initial gains and because it restored self-confidence.

Israel will hold ceremonies commemorating the war on the eve of the Jewish calendar's anniversary, which takes place next week

Yeah, Arab media has learned the perils that lying eventually catches up to you.  They relentlessly told the Arab world Saddam was kicking the US's ass in 2003 so when the images of Saddam's statue toppling came it created massive shock and cognitive dissonance.

Your maps are incorrect. Israel captured the Sinai in the Six Day War in 1967. In 1973 they actually crossed over the Suez and were heading to Cairo when the Egyptians cried "uncle."

I'm a huge moron.  that's why.  I'm only studying international security and planning on going into miltiary intelligence.  This does not bode well.  (I made those maps from others that's why I f-ed up. - I put new maps up now)

Ahhhh, so they actually won the war before they lost it. Worked for John Kerry, why not the Hajis?

The reason the Egyptians think they won is that prior to the war there were no Egyptians east of the Suez Canal and afterwards there were.  Egypt got the whole east bank of the canal IIRC.

As for the Israeli troops in Egyptian territory. Their view is that the Israelis were just barely able to get there.  And that if the Israeli troops had the strength to launch a major attack they would have.

Animations cannot express how much I am laughing now.  The Egyptian troops that were 'there' as you put it - on the east side -, were surrounded in the desert and out of supplies and were literally rescued, and had to be rescued, by the end of the war.  Kissinger has called the ceasefire more of a humnaitarian effort to save those soldiers lives as Israel was intent on starving them to death without combat.  They literally needed help getting back to egypt they were so depleted.  This was a third army of more than 45,000 men with no supply lines completely encircled.  Israel later baretered them in teh ceasefire for the israeli pows.  That's right, ISrael BARTERED them, israel OWNED them.  period.

And those barely there Israeli troops on the egyptian side, were some of Israel's best fighters within eyesight of Cairo, in strong offensive positions fully armed and supplied for an assult that was poltiically untenable - heck the leadership didn't even want sharon to cross so far, but he was over and said that stopping would mean casualties.  Only the end of the war stopped him.

They crossed the Suez Canal in force.
And their troops did not automatically retreat when the Israelis shot back.
And if America hadn’t resupplied Israel with TOW’s, and other supply’s, things would have been very different.
In the Sinai the battle was almost a draw.  Considering how badly Egyptian troops fought in previous wars, this was almost as good as a win.

In the end Israel was knocked down a peg, which was badly needed, and laid the groundwork for the Egyptian/ Israeli peace talks.  There has been peace between Israel and Egypt ever since.

Let them have their fun.

Any day the Moonworshippers loose 50-100 men to their enemies 1 i s a great victory for them!!

They could lose 1000 people to kill 1 enemy and celebrate it as a victory!!!

Thats why they will NEVER win a war, People are resource and they don't care if they die so they will eventually run out of people!!

Things wouldn't have been different.  The TOWs were a political win as the USSR realized that if they jumped in to save the Arabs(again) then the US would get involved.
Wanna drive a liberal jew nuts?  The two presidents that were the biggest supportors of Israel were W and Nixon.

History lesson.
two egyptian armies crossed the Sinai.  The 2nd and 3rd.  They never penetrated more than 10 klicks past the canal.  The initial Israel counter attack got beat pretty bad as the SAM screen kept the IDF at bay and the commander of the lead brigade fucked up and turned the flank too early.
The Israelis successfully repulsed the Syrian attack (this was the decisive fight of the war) and were pretty much free and clear to damascus.  The syrians begged the Egyptians to attack to take pressure off of the syrians.  Egypt crossed their tank reserves to the East Bank and attacked into the teeth of a prepared Israeli defense.  They also went beyond their ADA screen.  The cream of the egyptian tank corps was decimated and they quickly sued for peace.
Sharon then found the seam between the Egyptian Armies and penetrated and crossed.  The 2nd Army was not surrounded but the third (with the bitter lake to its back) was completely surrounded.
With the reserves committed and destroyed, there was nothing stopping the Israelis from taking Cairo and Damascas
But, the arabs didn't completely puss out and the 2nd and 3rd armies, while surrounded or in untenable situations, didn't surrender.
Great campaign to study.
Would have been interesting if Jordan had gotten involved.

As you wrote that I remembered the phrase, “The Valley of Tears”.

Syria came very close to winning up north.  It was so very close.  Israeli tankers fought quite literally to the point of exhaustion.  Had Syrian troops fought a bit smarter, just a little bit more, the Golon would have been cleared of Israeli forces.

Syrian troops did not run and flee.  They fought and fought hard.

Why do folks say DECIMATED when they mean ANIHILATED?

Decimated = 1 in 10 losses...  and was used as a punishment in the Roman Army for units which mutinied or showed cowardice in the face of the enemy.

The story of the Israeli tankers that took an unnamed valley and turned it into the Valley of Tears is one of the best I have ever known.

Had gravity not been in effect I would be floating now, what kind of statement is "had they fought smarter..."?

Of course israel BARELY held off the syrians, they were only fighting 1400 tanks with 160!

as regards syrian troops not running and fleeing - THEY WERE ON THE OFFENSE!  You say it like Israel attacked them and they stood their ground!  They attacked and got trounced!

and those valiant syrian troops????  They were such good troops that they only killed and mutilated a third of their pows.

During war-time, the Golan crest acts as a defensive wall channeling a Syrian attack through two relatively small approaches. This is exactly what occurred in the 1973 Yom Kippur War, when Syrians attacked through the "Valley of Tears" gap in the north and over the apex of the shoulder of the volcanic hills in the south . Using every centimeter of the Golan terrain. 160 Israeli tanks barely managed to contain the more than 1,400 attacking Syrian tanks for 48 hours until the reserves began to arrive. Of the 119 Israeli soldiers that the Syrians captured in the first two days of fighting, 42 were later found murdered, their bodies mutilated.

Syria has NOTHING to be proud of from '73 except for the fact that syria still existed when the war ended - and they have israeli diplomats to thank for that.
