Hey,
I believe my house was built in 1940 or so. The dining area had this flooring installed when we moved in - it's a tile with brass inlays. We've always hated it and are about to rip it out and install either hardwood or ceramic tiles. Before we do, I know some Arfcommer has an adea about it's age or what time period this sort of thing was popular. I say it was laid in the 40's, my wife says the 50's. Thoughts?

Looks like some of the early Formica tiles.
My bet is on mid-50s. ETA... ALTHOUGH!! afterthought.... the star design also says 60s mod scene. |

That tile was laid during The Age of Bad Taste.

My guess is late 50's or early 60's. Could even be the 70's.

If it's any consolation the tiles are probably contain asbestos, fireproof=tactical

Before we built our current home, we looked at buying. We once saw a very nice two-story brick home in town. It looked great, until the agent opened the front door... Orange shag carpet everywhere, and hideous wall paper ON THE CEILING!!! One bathoom had a pink toilet, sink and tub, the other had a blue toilet, sink, and tub. The kitchen had the ugliest cabinets ever created in Satan's woodworking shop. Of course, the house was listed as "having lots of charm." |

From the 50's ....
I'd be very careful. Linoleum from that time had asbestos in it. I ran into some similar stuff when doing a remodel. |

asbestos- tear one up and try and burn it- use precautions- try not to "tear" it I tore min up with the subfloor

12x12, usually no asbestos, 9x9, usually contains asbestos.

I'm not sure but it really looks like the designs in the Denver Airport. Perhaps your house is part of the New World Order?

Yeah because th emodern VC (Vinyl Composite) tiles don't contain Asbestos

Well,t eh VC tile I bought last week for a job contained asbestos, 12" x12" tile. ALL VC tile contains asbestos as far as I know, every package I have ever seen has had warnigns to that effect on the side. Which is why I wear a mask and *generally* have a vac attached when I am using powered tools to cut them Oh and I think that floor is late 50s give or take. My grandparents had a similar floor in their house built in 54 |

I believe the tiles are post war.....late 40's. They are almost identical to the tiles in the local municiple waste water treatment plant.
Those are industrial stength tiles no doubt.Tearing them up will be a considerable task. You should consider taking up the floor boards and replacing them is modern subflooring. |
