If you wouldn't mind, just drop me a line here saying if you can surf the web while at work.  Doesn't matter your working situation:  self imployed, work from home, sitting at the bosses desk, etc.

I'm laid off right now - well just rounded up a few small projects - and I see many folks post during working hours, saying 'I'm posting from work' etc.

That amazes me that you could surf while on the company's dime.

I work construction, and by our company policy we are not even allowed to carry a cell phone while working.  We can carry a phone in our lunch pail, and use it during break or lunch.  I have personally seen a guy fired for using his phone at the wrong time.  I was on a ladder and saw him head for the mech room to hide, and the Manpower Guru from the shop was about 40 feet behind him - it just wasn't his day.

Thanks.

Can You Surf The Web While At Work?

Yes, though I admit that I do so to excess sometimes.

It's actually encouraged here. Great stress relief. And one project I'm working on currently REQUIRES me to be online at times.

I surf at work.

But I work in IT. Surfing for info on the web is an important part of the job.

It only becomes excessive in my opinion when the job isn't getting done. So long as the job is getting done and done well, I don't really care what folks do online. Even gaming.

I'm the Network admin, so.... who's gonna catch me?  Companies policy is that it's a resource to be used as long as it doesn't interfere with business activities.  We have a few that get in trouble but most keep it under control.

For one the phone policy is BS.  There are many reasons to have a phone for personal emergencies throughout the day.

I require the Internet to do my job.  Aside from all the e-mail I get and send every day, I have to access websites of companies we do business with, download applications to use or install on other users' PCs, and research computer or programming problems on the internet....

And surf Arfcom.

Yes, the senior judge here made sure I got an internet connection at my desk, and he sends me e-mail from time to time.  No filters or anything, they trust me not to look at anything questionable.  Due to my line of work, looking at firearms related stuff is very acceptable, so no worries there.

Nope.  My the company is like a little gestapo - could go on for a while about that.  Strict like you wouldn't believe.

Chaingun mentioned "personal emergencies" - 6 years ago or so when I was married, my sister in law near Houston was being driven home from the hospital by her brother.  She had abd surgery.  Some jerkoff ran a red light and t-boned them - hit dead center of the truck where my SIL was sitting.

Long story short, it took 1hr 45 minutes before I got the message.  Borrowed a phone from a co-worker (I didn't have a cell then) and called the ex.  She had already left (leaving SA driving to Houston).

I was pissed, and reamed the Manpower Guru out.  Bought a phone shortly there after.

Not married now, but have had the need to have my phone with me during work hours.  I just told them 'I'm waiting on a call' or something.   If they fire me, fuck 'em.

Otherwise, not carrying it isn't a problem for me as I would probably break the thing anyway.

Now for guys that are married?  Sheesh...no way I'd be without a phone.  Couple of my friends carry beepers, and only their family has the number.  They get beeped, they know it's an emergency, and go make a phone call.

It does suck having to hide (literally) to make a call though.

And people thought the Union was all donuts and coffee...HAHA!

EDIT:  And FWIW, the other Union trades I work around talk on their phones while at work.  We are one of the lowest paid, most stricly enforced (shop rules) trades in the area.

As for personal use, nobody really cares as long as my work is getting done, I've spent good portions of some afternoons when I wasn't busy on jobrelatedstuff.com.

Now, the first rime they give me a deadline for something and I blow it off because im internet surfing, I'm sure that I'll get to have a fun conversation with the boss.
