For various reasons...

I'm going enlisted now, with the intent to take another shot at a commission in a few years when I have some actual experience in the Army....

I've got orders for AIT, MOS 15G (Aircraft Structural Repair), which while not my first choice (That was 19K - I was going to be an Armor officer had I graduated, and would have liked to have my enlisted time  in Armor for the above mentioned 2nd go around)

Oh well, there are worse things I could have gotten, and I do have a decent interest in aviation...

So I guess I'll be learning to fix helicopters....

Still wish I'd have gotten to be a tanker...

Your lucky, "Needs of the Army" could have landed you a real shitty MOS and trust me there are worse MOS's.

Well, it might have been for the best.   You will get to know how it is to be enlisted and see how things run.   After a few years, I think you will do much better at OCS if that is still your goal.

I taught at OCS for a while  - not graduating is no indication of your character or potential.  Shit happens.  I saw a lot of young folks not make it for so many various reasons.  You may try again in ROTC, or in a state OCS.  Failing is tough.  You are obviously taking it strong.  Move out and draw fire.

There's a great many officers that are nothing more than over inflated asshats.   Enlisted to officer generally garners more respect from the troops.

This is not to say there arent a number of well respected officers who were not prior enlisted.

There is no dishonor in enlisting first.   You will be better for the experience.

Ft. Knox or Ft. Lewis? It certainly couldn't have been the physical part-because I thought it was a joke at both places.  Going through Camp Tontozona with Frank Kush was 10X harder than Army OCS!  I didn't think I would make it out of there alive!!

I say bullshit-go back to your ROTC unit and pull your balls out of your throat and request to go again.  And whatever it is you sucked at, get off your ass and and use this time to get better at it!!  Lose the defeatist attitude and lift your head up.    Your going enlisted is a cop-out because you are feeling guilty.

If you have a dream, and you obviously do, then go after it, or you will hate yourself later.  Hell-you already have or are close to having a college degree-and that's half the battle!

The best officers I ever worked for were all prior enlisted.

A good buddy of mine, came from 3rd ID (Old Guard - think Honor Guard at the Tomb) was an E3 when I met him, got E5 in no time, was the most squared away E3 I ever saw. His father was an LTG and insisted my buddy do 5 years as enlisted before going through OCS. Got to have dinner with both of them, in uniform.  Got picked up in a staff car in front of my CO and XO. It was so cool. He will be a kick ass officer.

I knew an O3 with 17 years in service. He was an E7 before switching to the dark side. He was a hell of a guy and I respected him dearly.

Go spend some time doing the work then go back to OCS and show them how it's done right.

Good luck. Former 11b. I gotta go get a box of squelch and some high speed missile wax......

Can I assume from some of the comments here that federal OCS does not require you to have been enlisted prior to going to OCS?

Can I thus assume that there are different types of OCS for active duty troops depending on if they were prior enlisted or not?

OCS programe for federal (active duty) troops. Ft Benning, no? I went to State OCS as a Guardsman. (There are several regional centers: in my case, Ft Meade, S. Dakota with a few weeks in Ft Lewis, WA).

Or is 09S (Officer Candidate) something you can do for Benning? (i.e. Basic Training, then instead of AIT go straight to OCS)

I don't know if you can do this, the service guys will hopefully comment:

But if you go to learn how to fix choppers, could you then apply to go fly them and be a WO?

Seems like that would be a plus to the Army, the prior experience on choppers.

ETA: Or you could just discover that your Sgt hates you, use your knowledge of statistics to prove you're getting screwed over on assignments, keep a journal of everytime they violate any rule the Army has, and then email it to your entire chain of command from a LtCol on down. Then they might let you go tanks. Worked for a buddy of mine.

Federal OCS is branch-immaterial now... Used to be branch specific prior to the 70s (eg Benning was 'Infantry OCS', Sill was 'Arty OCS', and most of the support branches didn't have OCS open to them)...

Yes, you can enter as a 'College Op', which means that you go to basic, and then OCS instead of AIT. If you don't make it, weather for medical, PT, or other reasons, you go 'Needs of the Army' - you put down a list of 5 MOSes from a list they give you... They 'encourage' you to only pick from a 'top 25' priority list, which I kind of ignored (since that would have forced me to put down an 11, 92, or 88 series MOS, none of which I wanted)... I filled in my last 2 with aviation specialties, and apparently the Army needs helo mechanics more than tankers...

Oh well, I'll take advantage of this, try and get what I can from the FAA with my Army training (A&P ticket)... And I'll be back to OCS in a few years, with some more experience...

Don’t sweat it. It was just a school. Some of the most gungho kickass soldiers out there have failed a school or two.

Going enlisted first is the best route to becoming a well rounded soldier and officer, so you are right on track where you should be. It also gives you a chance to experience the fun of enlisted military life. The next few years will be more fun enlisted than as an officer. There is so much fun the officers miss out on.

I think you have until age 30 to become of officer. If you don’t have a Bachelors degree yet it will be better to go to college fulltime in the ROTC than go to OCS and try to pick up a degree while serving.

My State OCS was two 3-day drills, a 4-day drill (Which cut our numbers from 170 to 85 or so), two more three-day drills, then 6 weeks in Ft Meade, South Dakota, flying immediately to Ft Lewis, WA for phase III (Two weeks), and then immediately after, a final week in Camp SLO in California. 11 weeks total. Not too 'lite'.

And I did it the easy way. The few monthly drills I did were more than enough to realise that anyone who had any choice in the matter did -not- want to do the one-weekend-a-month method. The weekends tend to be rather unpleasant: Once you're in a resident Army course, you just need to put yourself on autopilot and you'll get through it. It's absolutely horrible to spend your 'civilian' time thinking "Oh god. I've got another OCS weekend coming up. Why am I putting myself through this?" with this little voice saying "Quit. It's not worth what it's doing to you"

What does ROTC have to do with OCS?

I smell a rat.

OCS, FWIW, is at Ft. Benning, and has been for some time.  There are National Guard programs as well, but I'm pretty sure all go throgh Benning for at least part of it.

Besides, anyone who has been through a few Army schools would know that rarely is it the "physical part" that fails people.  Injuries and other bullshit are the main thing.  Sometimes you can just piss the wrong person off.
