I would think federal elected officials get some type of security clearance automatically since there jobs would oftimes require them to view classified material.
How does this work? Obviously, some of them could never pass a normal background check.

CongressCritters automatically get a secret clearance, which is not much. Staffers have to undergo the usual BC. To get higher clearances, such as on Intel Committee, they have to undergo the usual BC.

Except for those who worked for the Clintons  that they kind of forgot to do background checks on.
