It's an old gyrocompass. No all of it is there though. They were often very large and even had objects painted on them, although this one doesn't. The early ones almost never look exactly the same either. Do some Google searches and you'll see that's what it is. Used for navigating ships of course.

Except that the object in the pics above only has the ability to move on one plane. The wooden barrel shaped part also has what appears to be a hand operated valve on the bottom and another hole on one side. I think it is some sort of early plumbing fixture. A pump would pump the fluid into the barrel through the brass fixtures on the side, and then that fluid could be released by operating the valve at the bottom. Not sure why it has the gears so it can rotate thogh. Maybe it had a directional fixture that could be attached to the bottom valve. ETA, looking back at the pictures, it appears to have multiple fixtures on the side, one at the mid level and one up higher. Perhaps the fluids inside could be pressurized as well. |

From everything I've seen it looks like a compass device from an old ship, but it could be something else. I'm no expert on compasses or antiques though. The fixtures IMO are just the various handles or other mechanisms that were attached to it. I don't think it's at all close the having all the parts attached, so it looks strange. I've seen a few of those old gyrocompasses from old ships in my life and they always looked different and were pretty large as well. Keep in mind that just because it looks like plumbing doesn't mean it is. Brass was used a lot in old times on ships and the way things were attached were similar to pipe in plumbing.
If I'm wrong though, I'll be the first to admit it.

That's what I'm thinkin'. Copper and brass. It's some sort of Naval pump able to rotate and "Probably" sitting on top of a gimbal. |
