I'm thinking about a lever gun to keep around expecially in car.  I hear good things happen in 30 caliber out of a lever gun, e.g. 30-30, 357mag, etc...  anyone make a 30 carbine.

As a corrolary, what caliber would you get a lever gun in for a general home/car throw some rounds in teh tube, leave it alone for months on end and know it'll work gun?

I never thought of a lever gun as a trunk gun, but it sounds like a really good idea. The velocity of .357 magnum or .44 magnum out of a carbine length barrel must be astounding.

The only lever gun I'm aware of in .30 carb. was Marlins adapatation of its model 56 "levermatic".  Haven't seen one in years & the last production of it must've been in the late 60's or early 70's...

A friend of mine had one, shot well...but hell's fire, just buy one of the new production semi's....better car gun anyway;.

Are there flat-nosed bullets for .30 carbine?

I have a Model 57 levermatic .22.  OT, but I thought I'd just say it.

There are all pretty round to begin with, but the HSP from Winchester are flat.

I've never seen a .30 Carbine lever gun. Not really a good cartridge for a traditional tube magazine design either. Too much FMJ out there for someone to stuff in the magazine even though the manual would recommend against it.

I've got a .357 Marlin 1894 that is just a ton of fun to shoot. Short, light and handy. Holds 9 rounds in the mag tube (more if you modify the plug). Easy on the shoulder, but still has enough pop to take deer at reasonable ranges or repel boarders if/as required.

That's my thought... usually no.  Most .30 carbine, especially FMJ is pointed.  Not really really pointy, kinda rounded, but still enough to make me uncomfortable.

If you want something with that type of ballistics... uhh... .357 with light bullets?  Heck, some .357 loads in a rifle can get close to .30-30 performance.  (at least old/original .30-30 loads)(I push a 158gr pill to near 1800fps in a 16" carbine)

My 18.5 inch Marlin 1894C .357 gets 180 grain lead moving at 1,703 fps, 158 grain JSP to 1,867 fps and 125 grain JHP over 2,200 fps.

Buffalo Bore ammunition lists a 158 grain load they claim is over 2,150 fps in an 1894C.

Anybody know for sure when Marlin discontinued that gun?

A friend of mine has one of the Marlin lever action .30 Carbines.  It's more like a cheap version of a Savage Model 99 than a traditional 1894 patern lever gun.

on this subject, how dows the 9410 with a slug compare to a 3030 round?

e.g. which caliber lever gun SHOULD i be getting if the 30 carbine is such a rarity.
