Parents testify: Other parents who testified said they remembered board members making some of the comments that were reported.
Parent Christy Rehm testified that she heard Buckingham make "inappropriate" and religious comments at public school board meetings, including comments that the United States was "founded on Christianity" and students should be taught that way, that the high school's ninth-grade biology book should be "balanced with creationism," and that students who attend college become "brainwashed."
She said she also recalled board member Alan Bonsell's saying there are only two "theories" to be considered for the biology curriculum, "evolution and creationism."
Rehm, who was pregnant at the height of the intelligent design debate, testified that the dialogue at the meetings was at times so antagonistic that she attended at least one of the meetings in the hope that, as she was weeks overdue for her baby, the contentious meeting would induce labor.
Rehm is an English teacher at an area school. Her husband, Bryan Rehm, is also a plaintiff in the suit.
