COLLINGSWOOD — John Rhodie, a retired soldier who lives in Glassboro, knows what he wants from New Jersey's next governor.

"I hope that they get somebody in there that's going to help the state of New Jersey cut down on taxes," he said as he finished up his breakfast at the Collingswood Diner.

But Rhodie, 50, could not say which candidate that might be. Heck, he didn't know who was running.

Neither did the two other customers and three employees who were gathered near the coffee counter that morning. And waitresses said customers never mention the governor's race (which is between Democrat Jon S. Corzine and Republican Doug Forrester, in case you didn't know).

Forrester, founder of prescription benefit companyBeneCard, and Corzine, a U.S. Senator and former CEO of Goldman Sachs, are millionaires spending parts of their own considerable wealth on their campaigns. Both pledge to reduce property taxes and clean up corruption.

Experts say voter apathy is widespread across the state, even among those likely to cast ballots in the Nov. 8 election.

A Quinnipiac University poll released last week found that only about one in seven likely voters watched the first debate between the two major-party candidates on Sept. 20.

A Monmouth University/Gannett New Jersey poll also released this week found that a quarter of voters did not know whether the candidates were doing a good job of addressing important issues

I haven't seen any pre-election polls in the newspaper here either.

Oh well.. I bet Corzine will take it.

Forrestor is very much pro-gun though...

TRENTON, N.J. -- Three polls released within 48 hours show the New Jersey governor's race has tightened, with Republican Doug Forrester capitalizing on an ethics furor to cut Democratic Sen. Jon Corzine's double-digit lead to as little as 4 percentage points.

Corzine has "been on the defensive for about a month," said Clay F. Richards, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University poll. "He can't seem to get out from under that little cloud that has been shadowing his campaign."

Well just vote and get everyone you know to vote (unless they plan on voting for Corzine)

I think the GOP can take NJ in the upcoming election.

Let's hope.  Corzine's a tool.  He wants to be governor because he eventually plans to run for president.  But he knows senators have a lousy record of running for president.  Governors though have a great record/

Corzine is his own worst enemy. His typical elitist conduct, especially after McSleazy and Torricelli  is killing him. Forrester is probably a decent guy and real world businessman.  But that said, he`s as charismatic as oatmeal. If we had a Schwarzenegger (SP?) type candidate, Corzine would be toast. plus the main stream media has been giving Corzine a free ride, while being unable to find real dirt on Forrester. So they`re giving it as little play time as possible.
