Lots of fires burning in the southland. This one broke out in the foothills above my house. We were litterally standing directly under the helos as they came in to water and fuel up. The rotarwash, sound, and pressure was intense.

How far away is the fire?

From my house it's within a couple miles, however I drove over to where they were refueling and refilling the helos. Also drove to the other end of the valley to get the sun setting through the smoke.

The Santa Ana winds have died down (although the fire it creating its own wind), and the fire seems to have laid down quite a bit. They've also got some 700 firemen working it.

I was wondering the same thing, they look very sharp, but some seem to be underexposed.  Got me curious.

I hope you don't mind, but I edited one a bit just to see what it would look like...

Oh, great.  All that pollution is going to make the next hurricane even more powerful!

All pollution is Bush's fault.

The pictures were taken with a Canon 20D.

In a couple of them I was shooting directly into the sun, and in the rush I had forgotten my polarizer and a couple of my other filters and lenses, so I purpousely underexposed a couple.

Looks like the fire has moved west towards the 101, Agoura Hills, and Malibu. So we should be okay here in the Northern Valley.

Thanks for all the good wishes.

Currently not anywhere near the Reagan Library I hope?

Somebody started using the "a" word on tv this afternoon.  At least with respect to the Chatsworth fire that started today.

Nope, not anywhere near the Reagan Library (thank God!). The fire is burning on the south side of the Simi Valley, and northwestern side of the San Fernando Valley. It's really making its way towards Agoura Hills, Thousand Oaks, and Malibu.

Yesterday morning there was a canyon fire just one offramp east of where this bigger fire broke out. Firefighters jumped on that one pretty fast, and got it out. Then, around 2:00pm this fire broke out, less than 2 miles east. Suspicious indeed.

My eyes actually prefer stuff a little underexposed, but then again, I'm a fan of film noir.

Your editing looks really good. I like how you brought out the color of the brush in the foreground.

Definitely stay safe.  Geez, Southern Cali is like a friggin' tinderbox.  It seems like rebuilding there is like rebuilding NO.

Yea, especially after all the rain we got last season, theres a huge amount of unburned brush and foliage.

I don't think CA should get any help... I mean, why would anyone live where there is a fire season every year ?

I heard Bush was out there recently with a weed-sprayer full of petrol.

j/k I feel for you guys.

My pool, patio, bbq, and backyard are covered in an inch of ash. My pool has got all sorts of black crap floating and sinking in it. It looks like an ash cocktail.

The winds shifted today, and all that smoke is blowing right into the valley.

The news is reporting that they've got 7,000 firemen working it, and that it's 5% contained.

I actually had to work today (imagine that), so I didn't get many photos. Just got this one right at sunset, all of the foothills and mountains off to the right have been burnt (thats where the fire started from):

Unfreaking believable watching the Air Attack boys on these.little, medium and big choppers, S-2s and ond P-2Vs, and then the big 4 engine bombers all working in the same airspace.  Super Scoopers are supposed to be getting down here in a few days.

What rebuilding?  as of the last reports it's a few outbuildings and only one home on  the San Fernando Agoura Hills fires.  and there were some great saves.

Of course out in the Calimesa fire, understand the Elks are having a fired chicken dinner.
(No, that's not a typo, that fire started at an egg ranch and 90K hens went bye-bye)

Gorgous pic.  Very nice!

Hope it all works out well.  An inch of ash, I would be wary of breathing without some protection!

Edit:  Post 1776 for me...nice...
