After reading the Detroit Police tank thread, and seeing how the lowest part of society is behaving worse and worse... It reminds me of MANY movies from the past.

Movies/books such as; The Running Man, Robocop, Escape from NY, Demolition Man, Terminator, the FIRST Mad Max etc... Mostly the Sci Fi moives that depict a highly fragmented society, run by a police state, and a true underground of the last vestiges of people that are able to fend for themselves.

Slowly it looks like we are approaching that sort of lifestyle,... Ivory tower leadership, in control over an overly militaristic and aggressive police force, in turn control over a truely repressed mass of people.  All in the name of "safety, security, and preservation of "life"'

Are these movies predicting the future or just a bunch of hooey?  Or somewhere in the middle?

All fiction has a basis in truth. All good fiction is indistinguishable from truth. It's that whole "suspension of disbelief" thing.

Yeah, like Jules Verne, who accurately predicted most of our achievements a century ago.

I see frightening similarities between some recent "future predicting scenarios" and what we are actually heading towards.
The Ivory Tower vs Survivalists thing is getting more real by the day.

Escape From New Orleans, anyone?

Sounds like a soon to be "Made For T.V." movie coming to your local station.

I see the future more like Thje Fifth Element myself minus the evil planet killing entity trying to smash into earth. Lots of crime, more JBTish police to deal with it, but still some personal freedom.

I agree.  If you guess at every possiblity you're bound to get it right at some point.  That said, there's lots of sci-fi movies about the future, so that 10% isn't all that small a number.

Jules Verne wasn't the only Sci-fi writer.
Plenty of sci-fi BS out there. I don't see us mining spice on some planet with giant worms

That doesn't sound like SF.  It sounds like porn.

Nor did Frank Herbert.  His books require one to read between the lines.  They are enough to make your head hurt.

We could have an "Escape from Houston" also.

It's all BS.  I mean, here it is the year 2005 and I don't have a flying car, jetpack, or robot maid.
