Netherlands and most of Europe are quite liberal on pron. When I was there (about 7 years ago) I went into a pron shop in Amsterdam. Animal pron was openly displayed (visible to the street), and every lesser perversion as well (I'll leave those to your imagination). Also, legal age was 17 rather than 18, and as you can guess there was quite a bit of "barely legal" pron as well. I doubt things have changed since then.

In Hungary I remember the old ladies in my apartment building had Hustler as a bedside magazine. They apparently read the articles and did not mind the pictures.
Other students I knew said that Penthouse was another favorite "American" reading material for housewives. I still remember standing in the central square in Krakow and seeing this ~ 90 year old woman trying to turn her old neck sideways to look at the Playmate Centerfold she had unfolded. This was on a bench in the afternoon in plain view. Oh yeah, if Playboy Hungary were sold here it would never be in stock. On a more disturbing note I once bought a porn video in Budapest. Part of the video was filmed in the shop around the corner of my hotel that I bought it in! |

When I was in Italy, I noticed that after 10pm, the tv channels played hardcore porn, and not talking about cable, talking the VHF and UHF tv channels. Anybody could watch.

I want to say in at least one Scandinavian country, you can do porn as young as 16.
When I was in France in 1993, they had much more permissive TV. Saw breasts in a commercial at 2:00 PM on network TV. At night, they ran softcore stuff about like Cinemax here. |

In high school I hung out with the son of the German Counsulate. They are definitely more accepting of it. He was telling me it's everywhere from ads, to store displays. They don't worry about kids being around it. I don't remember him saying anything about it being sick. He had some magazines from Germany. It was definitely hardcore porn. Nothing like they described in South Park. |

In Western Europe they see all sexual behavior as being natural and accepted behavior while violence is seen as un-natural behavior to be oppressed and hidden from children. In many Western European countries you can see tit and ass (soft porn) on tv during all times of the day while violent scenes from movies and shows are edited out. Un-edited violent movies like Scarface is shown only late at night.
Here in the US of A we look upon violence as being natural and accepted behavior while sexual acts are seen as un-natural behavior to be oppressed and hidden from children. We can see every possible way to kill and torture people on tv during all times of the day but tits and ass are edited out of our tv except on late shows. Which is the right view? |

Dunno which is the right view. Britain isn't as liberal about porn on mainstream TV as the rest of Europe, but it is changing, and that's because TV is run by liberals, gays and all round weirdo's. It does strike me though that America is very prudish in many ways. My opinion...porn gets boring real quick and as for violence....well, most of the time it's just too unrealistic. I wouldn't like to see the day where hard core porn becomes acceptable on mainstream tv here though Mark |
