I live between Port Arthur and Beaumont, Texas, right where Rita landed. I heard about the mandatory evacuation and decided to bug out. I came up toTemple, Texas, to stay with some friends for the duration.
I wasn't particularly scared of a hurricane, but you cannot live in southeast Texas in 100 degree heat without air conditioning. It is hot and dry up here. The news says that they are not allowing us to return to the area until they have restored electrical power and cleared the roads of trees and electrical poles. My buddy brianksain called and said that my home appeared to be in good shape. He said that I lost a big tree in my backyard, but that it fell between two out-buildings and did neither any harm. (God is good.) I also lost my wooden fence and, of course, power lines. I'm having a nice visit up here, but I'd sure like to go home and see the damage. One big problem is that even if I returned home, there is no gasoline available for me to leave again. Guess I'll have to just be patient. Not my best attribute. Oh well, all my kids and grandkids are fine and we will just have to make do for a while. Thanks to all that IM'ed me to check on me. I appreciate the concern. |

Glad you are safe and that your property seems to be in ship shape. Here's to hoping you can get home soon!!!
Be safe and good luck!!! |
I am glad to hear that you are safe and that your home escaped major damage.
In the meantime I am sure everyone is looking forward to the .45 vs. 9mm vs. large tree match-up in the next Back Yard O'Truth. |

In the next Box O' Truth, Old_Painless tests how well N.I.J. level 3 body armour stands up against various categories of huricanes and tropical depressions.
If you have anyone coming down from Gawja, you can have 10 gals of Gas, just send the cans back.
Glad to hear that you and yours are OK! Any word on how long till you can return?
Old Painless
Good to hear your well and everything is ok as can be. |
Glad your okay O_P!
I don't mean to sound dumb or make too much light out of the situation but: Did the Box O' Truth make it? |
Generators require gasoline. There ain't none in Nederland. |
Wonder how many rounds it would take to cut a tree in half? |
Remember the old adage, "good things happen to people who are patient." The most important thing is that you're safe and sound. I'm sure Brian's friends will watch over your house.

Ahhh... The next box of truth??? Let's go for it |

I appreciate the kind offer. But Gawja is a little out of the way. |
I wonder about that. I'm sure not going to waste it on a designer purse. However, I've always wanted a 1911 Thunder Ranch Special..... |
Question: why is their no gas in southeast Texas? Is it just because there is no electricity to pump it or?
Gas here in AZ is not only not short, the price hasn't even changed. Still 2.85 a gal. |
VERY glad to hear that you're doing well, OP.
Here's hoping things turn out for the best upon your return home... |
good evening, OP. i can help with that. one of the boards that we staple targets to is attached to what is left of a red oak tree that was about 24 inches in diameter at the butt. behind the tree is a hill, and i had planned to cut it anyway. but i digress. it was shot about in half when the wind on the tail end of your hurricane broke it over the weekend. that took about 2,000 rounds of 5.56 FMJ and maybe 250 rounds of soft pointed 7mm magnum. the wind managed to split it up about 16 feet, so i haven't messed with cutting it yet. maybe what is hung up will blow out of there after a while. a widow lady down the road had a refugee friend from nederland at her house for a couple of days. i don't know if she is still there. i am glad to hear that you are safe and had little damage. it could have been a lot worse. i think you did the wise thing by getting out. you would have been welcome in palestine too, but i understand that it took 29 hours for this lady to get here. we could have shot some stuff. it is always fun. peace. billr |

Glad to hear all seems well, OP!! Lotsa folks `round here were a tad concerned.
Screw the rest! Great to hear you're OK! |
Glad to hear that you are ok. Too bad I'm this far north. My chainsaw would be quicker than the tree of truth.
I've had indoor for almost a year now. |

Interesting question. The gas stations were pumped dry by all the folks leaving. Then the store owners left. Now there is a shortage of gas truck drivers, and even if they brought it to the stations, there is no one there to sell it and no electricity to pump it. This may take a while to work itself out. Kind of a chicken and egg thing. |
Yep, right you are. When you come face to face with disaster, you realize that is important and what isn't. Family is important. The rest is just "stuff". God gave me all that "stuff" and if I lose it, He will give me some more. Simple as that. |

I appreciate the kind offer. In fact, I had several offers of a place to stay from friends on AR15.com. Anyone that says, "it's just the internet", is mistaken. I have many very good friends here. And not just the "internet" kind. The real kind. |
Good to hear you got out okay and that your family is safe. The gasoline situation will sort itself out by Wednesday, I bet. Just need to get the store operators and delivery drivers back in town. From what I've seen, gas prices at those stations which are open have been holding steady, and folks don't seem to be panic-buying. The general feel among the sheeple is that gas will return, so no frenzy to fill every available container.
Good luck getting everything back on line, OP. Alpine |

I had looked up where you are on a map one time and was checking to see when you'd logged in last when I saw you were on. Some of us were worried about you - where would we be without the Box O Truth! BTW, I'm just not too far from Temple so if you're feeling like a beer. ETA - I like that idea of the Thunder Ranch Special I was also going to say if you needed to save money, I have two spare bedrooms and the doggie likes company, but it sounds like you're with relatives. |
So , did you get all your undocumented shopping in before you left?
Glad you and yours are OK and the place, too. Have your friends been to see the range?
WHAT? No hurricane of truth?
What if zombies attack during a hurricane? We need to know what ballistic effect a hurricane has on projectiles. lol...glad to hear all is good with you. |
Dude it's dark out!
Shouldnt you be out doing a "looters of truth" thread or something? |
brianksain is doing that one for me. Last night they had a report of a looter in a building. They hollered over the loud speaker, "Come out or we send in the dog!" No answer, so the dog goes in. Turns out, no looter. But it sure could have had a happier ending. |
glad you are okay, when you return, make sure you post pics for the "hurricane o truth"
I was just wondering how you did in the hurricane. I hadn't seen this post, and I did a search to see when you posted last.
I'm happy to hear that you and your family are safe. Hopefully you will be able to go home very soon! |
