for a post whose entire useful content is contained in the title, such as "Al Jolson, star of "The Jazz Singer," dead at age 137," to get hundreds of views? What the hell are people expecting to learn from clicking the thread? You already know that:

1. Somebody died;

2. It was Al Jolson;

3. He starred in "The Jazz Singer;"

4. He was 137 years old.

Seriously, WTF?

With all the sadness and disasterous events going on in our world today, it is worth reflecting on the life of a very important person who recently died. In the light of the hurricanes and war, his passing almost went unnoticed. until burial time.

Larry LaPrise, the man who wrote "The Hokey Pokey" died peacefully at the age of 93 last week.
The traumatic time for his family began when he was being put in the coffin.
They put his left leg in ....................and then the trouble started.

I am surprised at your post. I always assumed that if a person was involved with cheese or wooden shoes, you'd already know the details, and he wasn't involved with cheese or wooden shoes, you wouldn't care. Apparently you are much more intellectual and sensitive than I had ever imagined.

Actually, if I were REALLY collecting data off ar15.com, I probably would need human subjects approval, although since it's sort of a "public" behavior kind of place, it's not clear what kind of consent I would need.

Luckily, because our human subjects committee also deals with the medical school (and we've got one of the really big ones in the country), they are really laid back about behavior research, and barely even care about survey research - because they often are reviewing experiments that DO involve injecting stuffinto people and drastic things like that.

As it so happens I just passed my university's certification process for being on the Institutional Review Board for human subjects research. If you just watch the threads and posts, then thats just observing public behavior and its exempt from IRB review. If you ask innocuous questions that pose minimal risk to participants, then you qualify for an expedited review by one committee member.

I love my job.
