LOS ANGELES (AP) _ An inmate who walked out of jail by flashing a phony identification card bearing a picture of actor Eddie Murphy has been recaptured, authorities said Sunday.
Kevin J. Pullum, 31, was spotted by police walking in downtown Los Angeles Sunday afternoon, the sheriff's department said.
Moments earlier, police had stopped another man resembling Pullum. The man was released and the officers drove around the corner to continue their patrol. The officers then saw Pullum, whom they recognized from a bulletin that detectives had handed out Saturday, authorities said.
Pullum escaped July 6, hours after he was convicted of attempted murder.
Police said a jail informant told investigators that Pullum made the card using a picture of Murphy's face that he clipped from a newspaper or magazine ad for the movie "Dr. Dolittle 2."
Sheriff's Lt. Carl Deeley said Pullum acted as his own attorney and was allowed to wear civilian clothing to court on July 6. Although he was reissued his jail uniform after the verdict, authorities failed to collect the civilian clothes, which Pullum apparently wore under the jail coverall during the bus ride back to jail.
Pullum eventually took off the jail outfit, revealing his civilian clothing, put on what appeared to be a jail employee identification card and simply walked through security and out of the jail, Deeley said.
Pullum was convicted of attempted murder for shooting a man six times in May 1999.
