Gun control group to run ads warning about self-defense shootings
The Associated Press September 23. 2005 6:27PM Font Size: 101112131415161718192021222324 gun control group is set to start running ads contending that a new Florida law allowing people to act in self defense without first trying to flee will make it more dangerous to come here. On Oct. 1, the day the new law takes effect, the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence will run ads in newspapers in London, Chicago, Boston and Detroit that contend that visitors will now "face a greater risk of bodily harm in Florida," The Miami Herald reported Friday. The group will also hand out fliers to arriving passengers at Miami International Airport drawing attention to the law, which passed the Legislature overwhelmingly earlier this year. The measure says people who are under attack don't have to retreat before responding, but can meet "force with force" as long as they're in a place they legally have a right to be. The person who feels they are under attack can use deadly force "if he or she reasonably believes it is necessary to do so, to prevent death or great bodily harm to himself or herself or another," under the new law, which was pushed by the National Rifle Association and signed by Gov. Jeb Bush in April. The governor's office said the Brady Campaign's tactics were inflammatory and false. "We think this is ridiculous," said Alia Faraj, the governor's spokeswoman. "Florida's crime rate has reached a 34-year low and the 80 million visitors who came to our state can attest to that. It's tragic that they would use gimmicks like that to scare people." A similar bill is currently being considered in Michigan. --- Information from: The Miami Herald, |

Good, too many people here already.
ETA: Maybe it will scare off some Liberals |
Any other FL members wanna organize a special trip to the range Oct, 1st to celebrate the new pair of balls FL just grew?
Damn!! This is probably going to cause more people to move here.
Yes, we're simply awash in gun violence since that law was passed.
I get shot at...maybe 4-5 times a day. Sometimes more if I leave the house. |
Sigh.....
We really need to come up with some kind of IQ/Liberal Tendancy screening test during pregnancy so we can stop these people from breeding. |
I'll be sure to contact the Brady bunch to thank them for bringing this new law to my attention (even though I already knew about it). Then I'll assure them that I'll be visiting Florida soon because the state's gun laws are so realistic compared to places like DC and NY. Besides, FL is reciprocal with TX concealed carry.

That could easily be turned against them like this
2nd Amendment Rights group is set to start running ads contending that Washington D.C. law forbidding citizens personal protection as a mean of self defense and being required to flee DOES make it more dangerous to come here. |
You must live in one those 'nice' areas. How about we all go to the airport and while they hand out leaflets we offer free armed escort to their cars? |
who really wants the kind of sheeple that would support them anyway?
Well of course you dumb ass...more dangerous for the criminals. (Not directed at you CRC) |
FINALLY WE GET HELP FROM THE MEDIA!!!
I suggest that everyone from enlightened Northern states please heed this helpful public service announcement and stay the Hell home!!!! It's too crowded here already. -Observer |
Texas CHL is good in florida right? Maybe I need to go visit, sounds like a safe place as of oct 1st.
Seems to me that the Florida tourism board would have a good liable case if they really wanted to press it. Even if no tourists care, it could still be shown to have a negative effect on a large and ligitimate business. One that generates huge tax dollars for the state every year.
michigan is considdering a similar law? id bet money it gets killed real quick.
Yep. |
So basically they are saying it is more dangerous in Florida to be a wild, violent, asshole, with no respect for authority because when you try to harm someone you might end up hurt?
Is that about right? |
You got it. |
I noticed from the article that the ads weren't being run in N.Y. Then it really would cut into the tourist trade.
Good. Hope they manage to keep some of them damn yankees home where they belong.
Looks like I'll be vacationing in FL this year!
My old Home State. 22 years of my life in that crazy peninsula. UF Class of '92. GO GATORS! |
One of the reasons that I'm a displaced Buckeye (as well as MacDill was where I ETS'ed from). Seriously, we owe it to gun rights activism and putting in the right politcians, starting with the Governor. My heart goes out to fellow citizens in other states such as Massachussetts, California, etc etc etc - it starts at the ballot box, folks.
A person could take this meaning that you now have greater chance in Fla then other states of suffering "bodily" harm. I think its funny how anti-gunners always believe that whenever laws get passed that allow people to further defend themselves they start screaming that more lawlessness will break out or that more inocent persons will be at greater risk...
LoL i like it, We are dangerous folks! I`m reminded of my favorite bumper sticker. "Welcome to Florida, NOW GO HOME!
nuke kali... |
Wow,I forgot all about that. I'm gonna start loading all my mags right now.
I guess everyone will want to come to Jersey because our gun laws are better than Fla.'s. And i was hoping to retire to Fla. in 7 to 10 years. Guess more people are not welcome.

No one paid any attention to the gun control groups before they passed the law, and no one is going to be paying any attention now.
If the Brady Bunch really thinks they are going to scare people away from Florida with their goofy ass ad campaign then they really are more delusional than I ever thought. |
Do you vote democrat? Do you think only cops and military should own guns? If not, hello friend. |
Come to Florida, where liberals say its the Wild West.
It really isnt. As long as this keeps sandal wearing hippy liberals away from Florida, Im as happy as this guy ---> |
A solid "Run and Hide" strategy in the face of gun control advocates.
I for one will disregard your advice. CWO |
Interesting how a person is supposed to run if they see an attacker coming per VPC. I guess we are supposed to outrun our kids and wife if we have to.
I support the ad.
Anything to discourage yankees and foreigners from coming to the state is a good thing in my book. |
We have some screwy gun comercials here in Oregon. One has two kids who presumably are writing each other a letter but echoing what the other is saying about staying tough, taking care of himself...etc....evidently one is in prison, who is left at home and the commercial ends with "Think twice before committing a crime with a gun - you're not the only one who will suffer."
I'd like to be the plumber for the toliet that money got flushed down. WTF good do they think those type of commercials will do? Do they really seriously think some kid with a gun pointed at someone will stop and think....hummm...if I shoot this asshat with the crank my little kid brother will miss me when I'm caught and am in prison?" I notices you are in NC. I know a good number of folks who leave FL for NC. I always noticed that. |
Plus 1 PLEEEEEASE, hand out the flyers at the NY and NJ Airports. Can I help you? |
+++1 This is a VERY DANGEROUS STATE, don't risk coming here. Please, protect your family and DON'T move to FLA with your NYPD, NYFD stooopid T-shirts. Yeah Yeah yeah, we have enough people here and too many liberal New Yoooorkers. Now git oooover it, youz guys! |
What? If you define 'better' as more strict gun control then you are correct. FL is a 'shall' issue state rather than a 'may' issue state like NJ:
If I interpret your post correctly then you are not welcome in FL. Retire to Illinois - you'll be right at home there. |

ARDun, I was the ONLY one that had a 'W' on the front lawn. the block was PLASTERED in Kerry signs. I still say, in 7-10 years, I'm taking the wife, guns, and books south. The rest I can replace when we get to a new place to live.
Not a Demo-rat fan. I guess my try at poking fun did not work. I will not be quiting my day jobs. be well Maxwell |
Yes, by God! All tourists, PLEASE stay away! You really don't want to come to Florida!
The blood that's been flowing in our streets since last September is going to be ankle deep on Oct. the first! Even Mickey Mouse is packing! |
That's what I was going to post when I read the start of the thread! |
When I lived in Florida I almost bought the "If the call it tourist season why can't we shoot them" bumper sticker....besides, that campaign would get me to go TO the state.
Shooter |
ya know, I dont have any problem with them doing this. Ya know why?
1.It will keep pussified whiny liberals from coming there. 2. It will inform potential criminals that if they try to pull their crap in FLA then they will likely end up in a plastic bag. So it should aid in the lowering of crime and liberal retard tourists. Thanx Brady. |
