I willing to wager that they aren't M4A3s. I have the same carbines in my armory and they are all stamped M4. There really are only 2 designations for the M4, the M4 and M4A1. The older M4 had fixed carrying handles and the newer removable, however both are either M4s or M4A1s. |

very early M4s had fixed handles, the M4 is SSB, the M4A1 is SSA, both are flattops.

The Regular Army Infantry uses 2 types; The M4A2 or 3 and the M16A4. The M4A2/3 is a 14" bbl, Flattop w/ detachable Carry handle, telestock, and a 4 rail hand guard. The M16A4 is basically the same thing but with a 20" bbl and full length solid stock. The M16A4 is used in the Squad Designated Marksmen role. The Infantry hardly use the carry handle because there is usually an optic mounted on the flattop, an Aimpoint or an ACOG. The USMC, from what I have observed, uses the M16A4.

   are all currently in use by the USMC. I have seen no proof that installing the M5/M4 rails onto the M16A4 or M4/M4A1 causes the designation of the weapon to be changed. |

Go look at the lowers again, they all will be marked M4. The M4A2 and M4A3 don't exist in the military. Those terms are civilian designations. The A3 in the military is an A2 that is full auto instead of burst. M4 with the RAS or RIS rails instead of the hand guards are Modular Weapon Systems, the same with the M16A4 with the M5 RAS. |
