Yes it will shoot 44Mag and 44 Spec interchangeably. I don't know about retail prices. I handload everything I shoot. Charles.

If you're shooting lead bullets, make sure you clean out the cylinder very well.

you will find that .44 mag is cheaper than 44 special because of the quantities manufactured. For plinking i use the PMC stuff from wally world at about $16 a box of 50, that is about the cheapest I have found ammo for.

yep, all day long you can shoot the 44 sp in a 44 mag.
but it will bite you in the wallet - that is why I stick to the military rounds. YMMV Badredfish  |

I have a Super Blackhawk 5 1/2'' stainless in .44 mag. .44 Special is great in it. The recoil is VERY light, and it's a much less intimidating round for new shooters/recoil sensitive people. I like to have dates and new shooters fire that first before they touch the Walther or AR, just because as a single action it'd take some effort to screw up and hurt yourself. I wish I could say .44 special is a lot cheaper, but it's pretty similar to the cheaper mag ammo.

Yep... Wally World didn't even have the 44 Special. I got 44mag 240 gr in jacketed soft point for 21 a box of 50
 I really need to start reloading, LOL. My damn 45 ACP was cheaper than the 44 for 100! So the 44 mag is twice as expensive. Hopefully she'll be as fun to shoot as I hope. |

I load .44 mag--I can help you if you want. MUCH cheaper. I'll have to check the legality of it, but I can load for you if you want. No biggee--I have a feeling you would do the same for me (or any other internet stranger). heh

No damnit! I don't know if you're kidding, but if you are it's a bad joke.  Yes, you Ruger 44 mag is built like a tank and will shoot anything you can stuff in the cylendars (sp?) even the lowly 44 special. But don't waste your time. Shoot cheap 44 mag, it'll be weak enough. For a real thrill get some Buffallo Bore ammo or Garrett ammo. They're both real hot. Shoot .22 if you want to do without recoil. edited to add: damn I'm too drunk to spell those round things that start with the letter "c" |

I wasn't looking for recoil reduction... I was concerned about price because I am broke. I still want to shoot, and I know 38 is 1/2 the price of 357. So I was thinking 44 special might be 1/2 the price of 44 mag. I guess I was wrong. But it isn't about recoil. |

Nope you thought wrong the .44 S&W special will be conciderably higher and will give you the same ballistics of a .45acp!!!
The only way a .44 has any real world mag class is with the .44 RemMag!!! And then it's a real handfull!!! With the right grips the .44 Rem Mag is controllable! I have had two (ruger redhawk) and have gone on to the .45Colt! Bob

OK, I'm impressed! But we need to add shipping and all the other costs. That can get pricey quickly. Still, it would be nice to just buy some reloaded ammo so I can afford to shoot for a few hours - and 21 bucks per 50 ain't going to cut it. If you shipped me 1,000 medium grade (not cheap powder and bullets, but not top of the line, either), what would you think it would run me? |

Where are you in AZ? Reload costs could be as low as $6.00 to $8.00 per box of 50. It really depends on what kind of price you can get on projectiles. Charles (in Tucson) the Gunsmith

.44 magnum is a good cartridge to reload, you can really take advantage to the versatility of the .44
Every thing from 240gr.hard cast plinking loads with a bit of Win.231 powder, to thermo-nuclear/bear stopping Win.296 loads that will far exceed factory ammo in power and accuracy. There's really no point in messing with .44 special in your magnum if you hand load. |

Reloading really is cheaper. If you choose to try it go to Dillon's and shop around for equip and components BEFORE you buy anything. Also talk to a few experienced reloaders and get the benefit of their experience. E-mail me direct (IM) if you need any help or advice. I have a number of clients in Phoenix. IM incoming--gotta add stuff up. The good news for you (and me on occasion)--I have an FFL. I also have a distributor on my way back from my farm. I go there every weekend, so if I stay over Sun. night I can swing by on my way back Mon. morning and save shipping costs--lead is heavy and powder/primers have HAZMAT fees of $20 EACH (must be shipped in separate packages)--which are above the cost of shipping. I can get the stuff at dealer cost, and it's only out of my way by about 30 miles, so it saves a bunch if I pick it up for you. Do you have brass? If not, I'd suggest ordering it from the back of Shotgun News--listed under "Reloading Components for Sale." New brass is needlessly expensive, if once-fired stuff is available. You might try the reloading forum for some links to sellers too--there is a tacked thread. You can have it shipped to my address to save. My wife is a master at prepping and resizing brass. She watches a stupid "chick flick" movie and will do hundreds in an evening without even thinking about it.  Hang loose for an IM.

Here's what I figured it would cost me to load 1000 rds of 44 Mag if I bought all the components at retail prices. This is just what it would cost me to load for myself, not what I would charge someone else. A light 44 Mag load using 240 gr cast lead bullets and 7.5 grs of Red Dot powder would cost $11.75 per box of 50 if I bought new Starline brass, same load without having to buy brass would be $6.25 for 50 rds. A healthy 44 Mag load using Horn 240 gr JHPs and 18 grs of Alliant 2400 powder would be $17.35 if I bought new brass, and $11.85 without having to buy brass. |

Plus what are you going to use it for?Hunting? You know that a 30/30 at 100 yards has more energy than a .44RemMag has at the muzzel?

I just bought a super blackhawk a couple weeks ago 5 1/2 stainless. Great gun and lots of fun to shoot. I save the brass, but I do not reload at this time. Sportsmans had ammo for 17.99 for 44mag and 16.99 for special.

I reload 44spl ammo for my SS S&W 696 5-shot, L-frame. The unfired cases from Starline Brass Consumer Price List New Unprimed Handgun Brass costs as much as the 44mag cases.

Congrats on getting the Super Blackhawk! Has to be my favorite and most accurate pistol. When I first got my Blackhawk I bought an assortment of .44 mag and .44 special. Some of it was .44 special reloads that were made for Cowboy Action Shooting. They use light lead bullets with a reduced charge. My 12 year old son loves shooting this combo. Unfourtunately, I cannot find these reloads locally anymore, which is a shame because they were reasonably priced compared to .44 mag. Since it is fairly expensive to shoot, I'm planning on reloading for it. I ended up getting the Lee Precision Press and Lee Reloader Manual combo out of the back of the NRA coupon book for $30. Just need to get some dies (.44 special/mag combo) and some components. I have been saving my .44 mag/special brass so I shoudn't need to get any brass too soon. Good luck with the Blackhawk! |
