This afternoon I will be flying to El Paso to meet a friend for some hunting. (Dove and Teal)  He lives close to Fort Bliss and they have a great rifle range that civvies like me can use.  I've been there before, and they have targets out to 500 meters.  Hence I am taking my shotgun for hunting, but wanted to take my AR to shoot at the range.

I've read all the rules on checking in firearms, and I have everything ready to go.  I'm just a little nervous that they will give me problems about the AR (it has many evil features).  Has anyone ever had experience with this?

Hell, last year I flew on United Airlines with a 9mm pistol concealed in a hip holster.  Nobody was any the wiser...

<there's obviously more to the story, but I couldn't resist.  Carrying guns on airlines is cool..>

Call your airline. Aks thier specific instructions on carrying or checking a firearm on board an airplane, ask if there is a firearm limit, and ask if their if their is a problem with bringing a legal semiautomatic rifle onboard. Ask if she can make a note in the syste that you will be arriving with a properly unloaded, and properly locked firearm. All this stuff will greatly help you--and its a 1800 number phone call.

I've flown twice with my 180. No problems except watching the person at the counter point it at her coworker. And how she "checked to see if it was loaded" by looking at the back of the upper reciever.

The guy in Mobile didn't even look at it.

So no worries, yo. Just make sure you lock the case up tight so the friendly folks at the TSA don't steal it.

I would not admit to that on the internet unless you are a federal agent or police officer that somehow got cleared to carry!

TSA employees are no longer allowed to handle firearms from what the guy told me when I flew with my pistol. You have to certify that the weapon is unloaded if I remember correctly.

I've flown on Delta, Southwest, and Continental airlines with my AR.  It's not a big deal.  I would, however, have the upper and lower receiver seperated when you go to the airport.  It looks much less scary that way and it's easy to see that the weapon is inoperable/unloaded.

Wouldn't that seem obvious?

Just go to the airline website and read all the restrictions on how ammo must be packaged, how much ammo is allowed, etc.  Depending on where you fly from, you may have one of the following reactions to "I'd like to declare a firearm"

(1)  Cleveland:

"Oh, here's the form" (hands me a form for an LEO to carry on the plane)

"no, I mean in checked luggage" (me)

"sir, why do you have guns" "where are you going?" "why do you need guns?" "where do you live?" "why do you need guns?"  "what do you do for a living?" "why do you need guns?" (dumb-fuck cop)

(2)  Tampa:

"Thank you sir, I'll just escort you over to security"

(3)  Albuquerque:

"Nice rifle!"

(4)  Islip:  (no guns, just a Surefire M3 in carryon and a couple knives in checked bags)

"Why don't you just carry those bags on the plane, sir?" (TSA drone)

"I have a knife in there" (me)

"Do you work in a circus?" (confirmed dumbass TSA drone)

.....

"I'm sorry, sir, we can't let you take this flashlight on the plane; it's a 'weight weapon'." (another dumbass TSA drone)

"It's ok, let him go."  (Older TSA guy that didn't seem to have his head up his ass.)

1993, I was in Vegas for a bowling tournament.  I blew half my winnings on the purchase of an AR-180. Missed my flight because I had to wait till monday to buy the rifle but got it home safely...

Last time I flew home I took my Kel-Tec Sub2k, Glock 19 and Kahr PM9 with about 15 mags in a gun case...in KC on my way home I got a funny/nervous look, at home on my way back to KC I was told with a  big smile "Looks like someone had some fun!"

I had a very hassle free trip with my Walther and AR when I went to Cali for training.
I had to demonstrate that the weapon was unloaded.  On the Austin end, the lady at the
counter actually let me carry more than my alloted ammount of ammo.
On the Ontario, CA end, the guy was very nonchalont, and, knew where to look to see if it was unloaded.  I saved the lady in Austin the confusion by talking through the places rounds could be.
Look at the ailine's policy re:firearms, print said policy out and, bring it with you.

Thanks for the info.  I already called Southwest and confirmed what I need to do to properly check in the rifle.  I even printed it all out from their website just in case the person behind the counter does not know the procedure.

It just never occured to me that the AR would be an issue until my wife made some comment about the airport folk giving me problems.

Wish me luck.  I hear that the doves are still flying like crazy over there.  It hasn't been that good around here (San Antonio).

Yes, it is. I've done it, but only once. Although, planes are one of the few places I don't really mind being unarmed. The seats are narrow enough to start with.

Once deploying to Saudi from Nuremberg, Germany and once going back!

Of course that was during Desert Storm. And get this, going over there we carried bayonets. Going home they made us remove the bayonets from our LBEs and place them in our duffle bags! They said it was “So nobody does anything stupid.”

The time to have done something stupid would have been on the flight over, not going home!!!

Good advice

I took my AR with me on a flight in Novemebr 2001 (soon after 9/11) and the security nearly pissed themselves when they opened my case.

Pretty funny actually.

and IIRC- you cannot carry ammo for the weapon (as was suggested above)

Twice...both times the ticket counter guy opened the case up just far enough to see something was in there and then had me lock the case. He chuckled when I duct taped the locks to keep them from flapping about.

Do NOT. DO NOT DO NOT forget to take the rounds out of the magpul MIAD grip. They get very angry about that.

I've travelled a number of times with my AR.  I usually have my LE6721 and my Sig 226 in the same Pelican case with about 6 30rd mags and two 20rders.  I've never had any problems with it.  However, when I was in Idaho a state police officer had to inspect it to make sure it was unloaded, etc.  Anyway, it took him about 2 minutes to figure out how to open the action (and he turned away from me with the rifle while he tried to get it open).  Also, he didn't know what the snap-caps were in my sig mags.  So he had to call over the TSA supervisor to ask about them, after I had explained what they were.  But it was no problem.  Then again, I am usually travelling in states like AK and ID.

I bought a Colt 6551 when I was on TDY once. I kept the rifle inside it's cardboard box and put the whole thing inside my garment bag which I was able to lock.

The inner container was hard sided and the outer container was lockable. The ticket agent bought off on it and I was good to go.

FYI, that was in 1991. Don't know if it airlines/TSA will allow it now.

UPDATE

Had no problems checking it in.  TSA guy didn't even blink.  Just checked to see if it was unloaded and then closed it up and let me put on the padlock.

Will be out at Fort Bliss giving it a run tomorrow.  Once again thanks for all the replys.
