Not work during a religious event?

When I worked for Safeway during college they wanted me to come in at 7am on a Sunday and I said but I have church till 9:30 and they said okay then come in at 10.  Later I said to someone that seemed odd they gave in like that and they said that the are required to allow me to go to a "relegious event".

Is that an actual law or was that just a Union thing?

Don't know about case law, but no corporation wants to get sued over any religious issue.
