As I understand it the police can't search a locked area like a trunk.  What if you have a suv, does a lock box in the back or a lockable roof top carrier also qualify?

The more I hear the more I wonder the best way.

Car top carriers are treated as cargo areas, like the trunk.
If it's not in the "lunge"area (capable of immediate access), then they cannot search it without probable cause.

You will be amazed at the huge cut in gas mileage you get when you are carrying one of those things.
