Looking at those side by side is very interesting. Not much metal left after opening the face up to accept the 762X39 rim. I wonder how often this does happen.

What Plateshooter said. Good reason to have a spare, headsized bolthead as a spare for you SHTF types.

Yeah, not much meat on the 7.62. Is there any gun Waldo cant break? Did that one keep firing like that?

Now think about the .50AE uppers the case head size on those is .514 vs.447 on the 7.62x39 and .378 for .223/5.56. I wonder how/if Tromix makes his bolts live long happy lives. |

Damn good question. Good answer would be better grade of steel and/or heat treatment. Let's see what we get.

Did you turn the inside of a .223 bolt to fit a 7.62x39 and use it in a 762x39 upper? If you did its a wonder that it lasted that long. The chamber of the 7.62 is also larger in diameter and would have backed up the bolt. That is why they have different sized bolts to fit the proper chamber. I wouldn't worry about the larger cals because the parts should be matched. The bolt for the 7.62 should look something like the one in a AR10 in size.

That's what you get when you *buy* a 7.62X39 bolt. No, I didn't open it up myself. AR10 bolts are another animal. I posted it as a FYI, there is .030" less material around the lug area. I'm just trying to pass some info on to the good folks here so we can all be better informed. No BS, just facts. |

I can't vouch for who made it. It had a feed stoppage from the loose piece of the lug. As for me "breaking" guns, well it was factory 7.62X39, the stuff is way to cheap for even me to load for. Just remember, I shoot my guns, especially the ones I like, a lot. That's actually the only broken part I've ever had on an AR, and since it is a non-standard modified item I can understand why it happened, hence the subject of my post. [:E] |

A few years back, I got a 7.62 Colt from the Berea show...finding satisfactory mags was the main reason I dumped it, unfired. (Glad nobody was hurt with yours)

Someone on this board (?) did a Finite Stress Analyis on these bolts. The "missing" lug where the extractor sits places a huge stress on the lugs adjacent to the extractor.
A way to reduce this peak stress is to equalize the load on the lugs - GRIND OFF the lug opposite the extractor. |
