Ok so my Step-Daughter is in Houston TX with her Grandparents and I just got word that my Father-in-law cancelled their hotel reservations in Dallas because they are planning on weathering the storm.

Am I over reacting by being as PISSED OFF as I am at this fool?

Is the entire city of Houston going to get evacuated?

... For me, it would depend on circumstances. If I were certain I could weather it, I'd stay

... Or if I were on my last few years, I would do like the 83 year-old Mt. St. Helen's Lodge owner Harry Truman did in 1980

Cities that take 169 years to get to the current population aren't going to empty out in 3 days.

That was my point! (although I didn't know the "age" of it)

I just got off the phone with this guy.  He said everything should be cool.  Don't sweat it.

Sounds like the father-in-law is a few cards short of a deck.  I would be pissed.

I'd go get my kid and punch that asshole in the mouth. Drive all night and all day tomorrow if you have to. It isn't that far from Colorado and you'll regret it if she dies(God forbid).

Too late to get the kid.......but I will take the latter half of that advise into consideration......

ETA:  We could get down there but from the reports, No gas is to be had for the return trip.

I already thought of that idea a couple of hours ago  :-(

It's a 16 hour drive. You have til Saturday. What the hell are you thinking if you don't go get her? Too late is a damn lame excuse.

Not when the only car we have is in the shop until tomorrow evening.

The eye will either hit Houston or go within 10-20 miles of it.  If it were me, I would be heading on a snatch and grab mission.

BS. Gas up in Oklahoma. Rent a gas efficient car. There is no excuse. At least get her out of the path, even if you can't get back home.

Update:

I am looking into a car rental RFN.

Why do car rental places freak out when you tell them you are planning on heading into a hurricane zone?

Where in Houston?

Houston is a huge place 50 miles across you can be in Houston and be 60+ miles inland.

Don't tell them. Lie. It's about your kid, screw honesty.
This thing is a monster, not to be trifled with.

Be sure to update us and be careful, man. I would also call the stupid ass in question and make him meet me halfway or let him know in no uncertain terms that you will kick his ass when you get there if he doesn't. I also would never allow my child in his care ever again.

There is a time and a place when you keep your mouth shut or BS.  Talking to the rental car clerk in this situation is one of those times.

Ok, we got a car and a ride to the airport to pick it up.

I am planning on hitting up Wally World and getting some 5 gallon gas cans to stuff in the trunk.

Anyone know the status of the highway going into the area?    My understanding is that both sides of the highway have been switched to outbound only.....can anyone confirm so that I can plot a back roads route?

dude, if you're coming from Colorado, at about this time, you're gonna be cutting it close.  They're now saying it's going to hit mid-day Friday, and it is a zoo to try to get out of here.  We're probably gonna stay put because there is no gas to get out of the area now, and a 4 hour trip to Dallas will now be around 14 hours I heard.

At this point I am seriously considering the wisdom of running down there and being trapped in the hurricane along with everyone else.

We could bunk down in the Dallas area as my wifes company has a huge block of rooms already reserved.    I am having her look into this now.

Will update.

She'll be fine.

Child endangerment?

Come on...

ETA: I take it back...the line has moved much closer to that direction now.  Hopefully he'll reassess.
