Sig P229. It's the same as a P226 pretty much, just more compact. I have one and I love it. It's the BMW of handguns.

Might want to add a Walther P99 to the list. Real nice gun. Good quality, compact (for a fullsize), and fits nice in the hand.

My suggestions would be (in this order):
1) HK USP Full size 2) Sig 226 I have both but slightly prefer the HK due to ergonomics and a sweet Match Trigger kit installed. CMOS |

I have a Springfield XD-40 Tactical model and I love it. I've shot hundreds and hundreds of rounds through it and it's never given me a bit of problems. It's got a great trigger on it, and feels much better in my hand than a Glock. I have several friends that own Glocks, and a few of them have even went out and bought an XD after shooting mine.
I may be a little biased....but I'd say go for the XD-40. |

Berettas are a top notch gun. If concealment is not an issue.
Tough to beat a G23 Any of those you listed will be great. |

I'd strongly suggest the P226 if you're getting a fullsized gun....the 229 would be my next choice, and I wouldn't go any further that those 2.

I would not recommend an XD "Tactical" (5" Barrel) for CCW. It's way to big and heavy. Stick with a standard XD (4" barrel)

My personal choice would have been the H&K, but that's because I'm partial to single action guns (my two pistols are a BHP and a 1911). The Springfield XD isn't double action. Berettas are just junk. |

allow me to be the first to say CZ-75. i think it is one of the finest 9mm service pistols in the world. and at around $300 an unbelievable bargain. it will eat anything. +P+ included.

Have him shoot the XD and the Glock 22. He shot buy whichever he shoots best.

For a number of reasons that will not get into right now, I say screw the .40. Get a G19 or a 1911 in 9MM or .45ACP, respectively.

A couple of the guys I work with were selected to test a handful of weapons for our agency. Some of the guns tested were the XD, Glock, HK, Sig, S&W, and Beretta. Among some other requirements such as accuracy and durability, was a 10,000 round test. HK and Sig did very well and won some large contracts.
I would recommend taking your friend to see and handle both, then making a decision on what feels more comfortable vs price. |

The P226 is an excellent choice.
It's one of the few I sold and really wish I had back. However I recently purchased a P220 used and I love it. If you can find one at a decent price, you might want to consider it as well.
