If it's done the right way, it's good. But the humanities have been really worked over by the modern university and academia. Politicized up the ying-yang, PC'd to death, past contributions denigrated because the people who made them were too predictably white, male, and European.
Most evil dictators, fascists, and communists/socialists were liberal arts students or artists. You connect the dots.
Yeah. Could be a great discipline if the asshats in the academy hadn't made themselves irrelevant. |
It's been screwed over by the PC movement. History, philosophy, politics are part of what made our country great.

Too many people think that University is about learning facts. Its not, its about learning how to think. The trivium and quadrivium type shit. My school in particular is interested in turning out a well rounded individual. An engineering degree, for instance, is worthless if you can't communicate your thoughts.
I'm a Liberal Art's major... I just took the easy way out. After 2 years of Tech School. I just wanted that piece of paper that said I persevered 4 years of BS! The Colleges give the hard sell that there creating well rounded thinkers. At a time when companys are buying specific technical do'ers... A 4 year Liberal Art degree just makes a great conversion piece, that's all......... But then you could always wipe your butt with it during a hurricane.....
of course.... very little of it has to do with Known Facts And Right Answers
So, subjects like English, History, Criminal Justice and Political Science are evil just because they have "liberal" in the college title? WTF? No, really- WTF? Ignorant, ignorant, ignorant...
Knowledge is not evil.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liberal_arts The liberal arts have evolved to include physics, biology, and engineering. Historically, the liberal arts were studied by the elite. Does that sound evil? |
Your choices aren't even worth trying to select an answer from.
Theres nothing evil about liberal arts. And since when is liberal arts a "subject" rather than a general course of study? |
When I was in college, a Liberal Arts degree meant = "Do you want fries with that...?"
I was going to get a Liberal Arts degree but went with the PHD in mall sales and fast food management.
At my university both my majors are considered liberal arts. Political Science and PERA/Coaching Track and Field. Nothing wrong with a liberal arts major.

Sweet! I've got something to look forward to........EVIL DICTATOR!!!!![evil laugh too] My students already think I've achieved this.... |
Liberal Arts = More rounded education.
I'm at a liberal arts school, and though it's nice to be educated in many different things, I'm at a slight disadvantage when the flood gates open after I graduate... Though i'm a econ major, I also know a lot about geology, history, electronics, and physics. That's nice. My peers at state schools who are economics majors are working on stuff that I probably won't even hear about till grad school, and hence will have much more impressive stuff to show to recruiters at leading firms. Me? I just have my charm I guess Liberal arts is better for making informed citizens, but really, i would have preferred a more concentrated study so that I could be of more value, and earn more bank when I graduate. |
Many universities use Liberal Arts as an "other" catagory. If you're not in the College of Science, Medicine, Engineering, Business, Education, Nursing (etc.), you get lumped into Liberal Arts.
Usually degrees like Poly Sci, Sociology, Communications, P.R./Marketing/Advertising, History are all part of the Liberal Arts program. |
Absolutely not. Silly question.
All disciplines have their merit and [relative] worth. We need historians, musicians and grammarians just as much as we need Dr. Strangeloves. Remember, Beethoven was a "liberal arts" major. Now...about those cheesy artists though... |
The liberal arts are just fine.
Liberal doesn't mean "leftist", at least historically it didn't. The left has grabbed the terms "progressive" and "liberal", but in fact Ronald Reagan was more of a real liberal than the leftists who opposed him. Within the modern academy there are a number of over-the-top leftists, typically concentrated in "women's studies", "African American studies", "Chicana Studies", and sometimes in valid departments such as history, that have been taken over by leftists. But that doesn't mean that liberal arts in general are bad, but to some degree they have degenerated. |
This poll is stupid.
Liberal arts is a term for a general education, not leftism. |

The problem with liberal arts is that it does not include the study of reality. Reality is the set of absolute rules that govern everything, can't be violated, always have been and always will be, and are the same everywhere. Note: can't be violated short of a miracle and always...for all practical purposes. Reality is learned in Engineering, Physics, Chemistry and the other Physical Sciences. Flying, boating, driving, shooting, archery and many more things like that also yield some knowledge of reality. Many blue-collar trades also impart a good working knowledge of reality. The language of reality is numbers and equations. liberal arts majors study fantasy, nonsense and bullshit that somebody just made up. That's fine, except it gives a person a mental foundation of Jell-O...upon which to make their decisions. The consequence is that person having very low critical thinking skills. Thinking things like there are no real differences, only differences of perspective. That things are a matter of viewpoint. (What a dumb thing to think.) Knowledge of the rules of reality, laws of nature, along with a knowledge of how to use the rules to do problem solving gives a person an excellent and firm mental foundation on which to base their decisions. The result is having good critical thinking skills. For ten years I worked as and engineer along with other engineers. Generally, the engineers could figure things out very well. For the next eighteen years I worked as a high school teacher in the education industry. The education industry is totally confused and helpless to perform the task assigned to it. The vast majority of people 'working' in this industry have no knowledge of reality and don't even know that reality exists. They make wrong decisions most of the time. So do the legislators who make the rules of the education industry. Bad decisions, based on bad decisions and a complete ignorance of the set of rules that govern the universe...leads to the catastrophically bad results we all see. Think of the mind as a cash register. Give it to little children, liberal arts majors, and they will put sticks, stones and dirt in the cash drawer. In this case the cash register isn't worth much. Give the same cash register to engineers and physical scientists and they put the mental equivalent of money into the cash drawer. In this last case the cash register now has positive value. Finally, filling the mind with fantasy is not just of no value, it is of negative value. That is, it is worth less-than-zero, it is actively and aggressively harmful. As and example I offer charles eichmann-schumer. schumer probably has a reasonably high gross intelligence, but in school he has studied only nonsense and bullshit that is just not true and is actively harmful. But, he thinks he has knowledge, he simply does not know enough reality to understand that he knows nothing of value, less than zero. So, to pump up his ego and to 'be somebody' he becomes a senator. In the senate he votes incorrectly just about 100% of the time. He will never know or be able to understand that he is wrong because his net intelligence is extremely low...because he has filled his mind with the mental equivalent of sticks, stones and dirt. eichmann-schumer is jewish. During the world war II era, german totalitarian socialists killed 15 million christians and 6 million jews. (soviet totalitarian socialists killed 62 million christians.) (These figures don't include soilders. Look up democide.) Even though totalitarian socialists, liberals, killed 6 million jews, schumer a jew himself, is a totalitarian socialists and pushes the totalitarian socialist agenda with unrelenting vigor. (I don't expect a totally self centered 'person' like schumer to care about the 15 million christians the german liberals killed, let alone the 62 million killed by the soviet liberals. But, the point is that schumer is just not smart enough to understand that he belongs to the same political party that tried to exterminate the jews...jews like him. And that, right there, is all you need to know about liberal arts. Extreminate activists. |
Thats a foolish post. Reason and logic are technically liberal arts.
And most engineers and doctors dont know shit about history. Apparently you are an exception |
Yes, that made up fantasy stuff like history, language, political science, economic theory and people skills. Perhaps you should write a book on the subject. I would suggest: "Engineering the Alienation of Others for Fun and Self-Aggrandizement" |
You don't know what you're talking about. |
Economics is not a Liberal Arts. It is part of the Business and Managment school. It is heavy on math, statistics, and accounting/finance so it is more of a science due to the math component. At least at my college anyway. Plus, my degree in Economics is a BS, not a BA. I also had to have a senior thesis/ research project. Liberal Arts schools should also include "Unemployment Line 101" as many people around here that get a general ed. degree cant get much of a job outside teaching. |

I'd be really surprised if most of the "good" modern politicians weren't liberal arts students, what with PoliSci and its related fields being in the liberal arts category. I bet most bombmakers (ours and theirs) were <<gasp>> engineering students too... |
If you say so
Are you suggesting that Mike is right? If not, maybe you can tell me just what you're trying to say. I have a double major in Fantasy/Nonsense and Bullshit so I'm having trouble understanding the point you're making. |

I think people like to call it nonsense so that they can feel that they are hard-nosed realists in a world of wishy-washiness.
Your incredible ignorance is on exhibit for all to see. Keep it up! |
