I want to get my CCW in Ohio. I wanted to practice but don't know what is expected. How big of a target, how far away, how many hits out of how many fired, etc.?

I don't know that all the classes are uniform (tho I think they're supposed to be), but here's what we had to do:

An NRA target (10" IIRC) from ridiculously close....like 10'. You had to keep 5 rounds into it.

Basically, you could THROW your bullets at the fucking thing and pass.

Practice is not required.

The shooting qualifications in Colorado scare the HELL out of me, to be honest. I was in a class with about 25 people. We each fired a total of 30 rounds give or take. 5 at 3 yards rapid fire, 5 rapid fire, 5 slow fire, 5 at 5 yards rapid fire, 5 slow fire, 5 at 7 yards rapid fire, 5 slow fire, then I think we had to do 2 with our non-dominant hand. All of my rounds were in about a 3" circle (was using a .22), but we had a couple people (women, actually) who put about 25% of their rounds ON PAPER, not even in the rings, just on paper, and to my knowledge they still recieved the certificate.

Your requirements may (should) be more strict, but I don't really know. I'm sure a lot depends on the instructor, too. Might as well give them a call and ask to be safe.

A blind man can get a CCW in Alabama, just ask for it...

You should be able to get one of the "official" targets for your state
we had a basketball sized zone right below the neck that we had to hit for a perfect score
practice at the longest range, the medium and short range shots are easy
(I had one big hole for the short range shots) You probably won't need much practice

In FL I know some don't even shoot others I've seen just want 80% on a sheet ofpaper at 7yds.

IIRC, in Louisiana you had one of those huge human silhouette targets very close (7 yards), and you had to get 50 shots anywhere on the black.

When I was getting my CCW, a 70 year old woman who looked like she had never even HELD a gun before did it with her little .38.

The Ohio requirement is two hours of range time. Our said his only requirement was to show we could load, shoot and unload safely. Basically if you could hit around the target and not the ceiling or the floor you are good.

I think the target was a 8 1/2 X 11 piece of paer at 10' or so. Nobody missed.

Be happy that your classmates were getting that much instruction. CO law does not require any actual shooting instruction to get a CCW.

I have talked to one instructor who actually got a "legally" blind man to pass in texas.

Aim a little higher, a little to your left, fire...

Have not heard of a disquailication due to range rules (getting kicked off the range for sweeping or shooting over the berm), but suspect that would be far more likely.

At mine 90% of the people had jams. One or two unloaded their clip when the instructor said "when I say fire, fire one shell" Jeeze, on one round the instructor yelled cease fire (due to a problem) and everyone just unloaded.

MO is also a full size sillouette at 7 yards, to pass 15 out of 20 rounds have to hit.
We also have to have 8 hours of classroom instruction covering the law, and shoot 50 rounds at the B27 with both revolver and auto pistols.

DD-214 copy and USPSA/IPSC classification card was all I submitted, I heard both were acceptable, so sent both in.
