"run" the number - AR15.COM

Anyone know what exactly a LEO is doing when he "Runs" the number on a gun in your vehicle etc? I see people mentioning it but what exactly are they doing? Are they just checking to see if it's been reported stolen? (in states without registration).

actually there'er "running the number" up on the internet so thousands of people can claim your gun as theirs and police from all over the country can come and take away all your toys...

Hes also running to make sure your license is still active and not revoked or suspended.
