Stanly Kurtz over at National Review has done some work on this.  I believe that the cause is that  young people in northern urban areas cohabitate without marriage, and when they break-up it doesn't count as a divorce.  Southerners are more likely to get married and thus more likely to get divorced when it doesn't work out.
