Hello,

I just watched a History Channel documentary about sniper rifles etc. It said that no-one has ever managed to put all 10 rounds thru the 10" X-ring at 1000 yards at Palma match, Santiago, CA. I suppose the guys shooting there are not amateurs and it's actually quite hard to get that sort of score. Any thoughts?

Martin Riggs could do it.  He hit a man at 1000 yards in high winds back in Nam.

That is pretty impressive...but I still think 10 shots would require a bit more than skill and a little good fortune...I'm not saying Riggs' shot was....wait a minute! Martin Riggs? Leathal weapon???

Yep.  I saw this documentary about him on Cinemax.  He even flinches and closes his eyes when he shoots.

Palma is 45 rounds, 15 each at 800, 900 and 1,000 yards. The NRA's Long Range Rifle Championships includes 10 rounds at 1,000.

Palma is also iron sights ONLY. No scopes.

A true Palma rifle is a .308 shooting a 155 grain bullet.

Palma is also shot from position.  No benchrest, sandbags or bipods.  Just a rifle coat glove and sling.

Shooters will use a scope.....to call the wind.  It cannot be used for sighting.

Some people even shoot the matches with an A2 AR.

One of our local HP shooters fired a 449 at the 2004 Camp Perry matches.  I think the X count was 21.  The most impressive thing was he used a borrowed rifle and ammo.

Only about 7 people in the world could have made that shot.

My wife's late uncle shot Palma matches. It is amazing that its iron sights. We inherited a bunch of his medals from Palma, NRA big bore, etc.

Can't you shoot .30-06 in Palma?

An ex-Green Beret captain told me once that he could hit a quarter at 1,000 yards.

"So could I," I said. "I have been a target shooter a long time, and I will tell you exactly how I do it. First, I get a high-precision rifle, about 300 WinMag or better. I know a gunsmith who makes very fine precision rifles, and I would probably get one of his best. Then, I handload my own ammo because consistent shots at that distance require consistently accurate loads. A good scope is a requirement, of course. My favorite for that distance is a 24x B&L that I inherited. Then I get into a solid prone position, with  bipod, if allowed.

After a few warmup shots to get the range and get the barrel to a good working temperature for the conditions. While I am doing these warmup shots I carefully judge the wind conditions for the entire length of the range.

Then you get this big-ass pile of quarters . . . . "

Now THAT"S funny!

FWIW, Palma is .308 with a 155 grain bullet.

IIRC, years ago it USED to be a 30/06.
