Well we didn't have AR15.com back in 1982. Hell the internet barely existed and computers that could call each other were revolutionary.

But we did have something similar. Warriors magazine.

It was an interesting magazine that was cheap pulp stock and a curious blend of Soldier of Fortune, Shotgun News and Blackbelt. It was billed as "The Magazine Of All The Fighting Arts" but it was so much more than that.

First off the editor HAD to be a FFL because this one showcased more new firearms than any issue of the American Rifleman. And guys like Masaad Ayoob and Chuck Taylor were regular contributors. And whoever did the research for the 1983 comedy "The Survivors" could have gathered 80% of their material from this magazine alone.

Warriors definitely covered the survival scene in the early 80s. This was right after the Carter administration when the survivalist movement was in full swing absolutely certain the end was near as evidenced by the recession of the 70s.

So let me take you back.

First will start with the "feel" of the magazine. Here is a typical editorial. The magazine was New York based but it was a very different NY. Back then Central Park was a third world nation after dark but you could STILL buy a brand new HK-91 at a NY gunstore for $375.00.

So how was it like ARFCOM?

Well even back then they were doing "Clips vs. Magazines."

How about a topic on "Bug Out Bags."

How about "AK vs. AR"? Well actually back then it was mostly "Mini 14 vs. AR-15"

And Tasers? Hell they broke the story...

Even a "HK Fucks the US Market" topic.

How about "Glock vs. 1911"? Well the Glock hadn't made the scene but they did cover the topic.

How about some "dealer prices"?

But the best part for me was the heads up on new guns.

Like when Action Arms imported the first UZI carbines.

And the new American 180

And some crazy thing called the HK P7

And then the MINI UZI.

Or how about something as crazy as a CASELESS machine gun from HK.

And stories about something called MILES gear.

What's most fun for me to read now is the Gunners Gazette section.

Here's one predicting the END of the ATF now that Reagan had decided to put a leash on the dog. Also noted the import of cheap AK47 semi autos.

Or one about how the KG-9 has be reclassed as a machine gun.

Here's one about the SHOT SHOW and how the US Army has cancelled their program to seek a replacement for the US M1911.

And some decent articles that would have been at home in magazines like Guns & Ammo or SOF.

And want ads for a company I wished I have bought 100 times more shit from.

They made the best martial arts equipment I have ever seen.

And Supreme Ultimate Power? They had that covered too.

Those were the days.

Cool Magazines!

Ah yes, 1982.  A very good year.  Boot camp, drill instructors, the pit, Mt MuthaF*cker.

I remember it well!  Never saw the magazine though I did read a lot of SOF back then.

I'm just waiting for someone to notice the M16A1s on the price list for $235 NEW. Of course back then you could still register a domestic machine gun so that M16A1 was gonna hit you for a WHOPPING. $435. Those Mac 10s for $110 would be $310 registered.

And in 1982 people thought those prices were ridiculously high.

Lemme guess.....

The big question on the editorial page was:

" What was the gun that George C. Scott used in  " Patton"?........."

Styer, you are a veritable FONT of information, reminisences, funny shit, and clever thinking. You, sir, are a credit to this NG. You ROCK.

You took me straight down the path of 1982 all over again; I'm 17 and graduating from HS, Miami Vice made the Uzi and the Mac 10 popular, and I'm young, have all my hair, a 29 inch waistline, and a sportscar.

It's been a wonderful journey. Here's to 40 more years!

Depends who wrote the article.

In the above Top 10 a 1911 .45 copy took the number one spot and the HK P7 9mm took the number two spot.

Mega Old School!

I had stacks of Warriors, Black Belt, American Rifleman, and every National Geographic and Geographic World magazines until one day my mom decided that she wanted the space in the basement. It all went to the dump.

It was a trip to see this stuff here.

I like the Sensei that trains with the big cat! We have them stalking around our house in PA, they always scare the sh*t out of me. My small house cat has kicked my ass before so I wouldn't want to face off with one of those big fu*kers.

Thanks for posting SteyrAug.

Could be worse. Could have been original Action Comics.

Thankfully I still have my BB mags going back to 1979.
