U mean format it? If that is the case, right click my computer, than, click manage, than click on disk management. I don't think you can do it do your disk if it is the main system drive, u have to do that when you are first installing windows

No, I mean write all 0s on the HD (or some other technique) so that previously deleted personal files can not be recovered.  I don't want to reformat.

Norton Utilities has some great disk tools, but it is not free, try downloads.com They may not be free either but they usually give you 30 day trials on most software......

With UNIX it's easy:

cat /dev/zero > big_file

Windows makes things so much harder than UNIX.z

For free utilities try pcworld or pcmag.
This program Sure Delete works easy and you get to set the number of overwrites.

Does this delete the whole hard drive or just the empty space on a currently being used HD?  Last thing I want to do is do a total nuke job on my HD.

Thanks

Use the PGP link that Sharky posted.  I do a Freespace Wipe every few weeks.

I've used a little freeware utility called Eraser that does a good job and is easy to use.  You can use it to "shred" files or to wipe up your free space.  It can do any number of passes and uses different techniques for each pass.  Default choices are 1,3,7, or 35 passes, IIRC.

Just go to download.com and search for eraser.
